Default Compilation of problems...

For the past week or so my 04 wrx has been shaking when it idles. also, whenever i turn the defroster on (or when it kicks in automatically) it makes the engine rev up a few hundred rpms and then back down repeatedly. i've cleaned the sensor in the intake pipe and am getting ready to clean the iacv. the last part of the problem has happened only the last two days. when its cold and idling, it sounds like there's a problem with my timing belt. it squeeks and scrapes every once and a while, not consistantly. in addition to that, when im at idle, and the car shudders (same as the first problem) my coolant temp gauge (factory guage on cluster) quivers. as the rpms dip down, the needle moves up and down sporatically.

im hoping that cleaning the iacv will help the idle but it looks like im going to have to change up something with the timing belt and accessories. i have no idea whats going on with my coolant temp gauge.

about the car, it has a little over 80,000 miles on it and i recently replaced the timing belt and one of the idler pulleys (took it to the subaru dealer). as far as mods i've only put pink 565cc injectors, vf39, bigger tmic, turboback exhaust, and a short ram intake on a cobb tune.

has anyone had similar problems? anyone know whats going on with my car? thanks.

The squealing noise is not your timing belt, but either the a/c compressor or the a/c or alternator belts.

Is the check engine light on? It's possible you are due for a tune up. Spark plugs are due to be replaced at 60K.

Why was the timing belt replaced? It's not due until 105K. It's possible the vehicle is off timing from the timing belt change. I would take it back to them, especially if it started right after the timing belt replacement. It's also possible that they didn't tighten the accessory belts properly and that is why they are squealing.

i don't think its the a/c of alternator belts. it sounds like its coming from the passenger side of the motor inside the timing cover. the belt and pulley were replaced a few months ago because it was squeeking pretty loud (i had replaced the a/c and alt. belts before i took the car into the subie dealer).

there is no cel and i replaced and gapped my spark plugs less than a month ago. any idea about the temp gauge fluctuating during idle?

when the defroster is turned on, it also cycles the AC compressor. I'm betting that the belt isn't tensioned perfectly. is the car shaking when you're not running the defroster? everything off? have you added/cleaned any grounds?

yea, the car shakes even when the defroster is off. i did add grounding wires a year or so ago but the problem has just come up. i havent cleaned any grounds yet. will try that this week i think, i have my car scheduled for an appointment next week (no worries, all under warranty).

I'm leaning towards a bad battery or connection. Same thing happens in my 07 rex (without the engine shaking) except the lights dim and the rpms drop to 500 before bouncing back above 750.

front 02 sensor is failing......

all of your symptoms point to a sad front 02 sensor.

not the af sensor in the up pipe

the one in your manifold

for proper diagnosis have Subaru put the car on the Select Monitor
and check the tolerance levels for the 02 sensor.

thanks, i have an appointment scheduled for monday, i'll ask them to tack that on their to do list.

*edit* I cleaned all the grounds i could find and took it out for a test drive. everything seems back to normal for now. Its not idling rough and the rpms don't drop when i shift. Im still going to take it into the dealership to have them check out the timing belt for the squeeking/scraping while warming up while all the parts and labor are still under warranty. thanks for the help guys, much appreciated.
