Default "tricks" for changing accessory belts?

i've followed these instructions for removing both alternator/power steering belt and the AC belt. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ht=belt+change
the alternator/power steering belt was still pretty tight after loosening the bolts. am i missing something?

i'd hate to cut it and not be able to fit on the new belt. i ended up doing that on my maxima which is the only other belt i've ever changed.
the AC belt came out without a hitch. any advice on the alternator/power steering belt would be appreciated. thanks.
