Flickr....to censor or not to censor?? - A photographers dilemma.

I've been debating this ALL day. Well mainly because a trusty female co-worker of mine recently had a change of opinion.

Here's the scoop. Just got back from China and would like to send out a link to my "China in Fall" Collection which is on my Flickr page - http://www.flickr.com/photos/hotrodg...7610598837529/. Well if you do this, people can easily navigate and see your "Collections" and or "Sets". One of my Collections is called "Femina" (latin for woman) and I guess some would consider it risque - http://www.flickr.com/photos/hotrodg...7611437414741/

Well at first my close friend, the female co-worker of mine thought it was ok, even the semi nude stuff. But after another co-worker of hers gave her point of few she is now thinking it's either 1. Slutty or 2. Makes it seem as though I have a fetish for Asian women (ok, perhaps I do). But I honestly think these are tastefully done and have the ladies permission to post their stuff.

So here's the dilemma. I think most of my friends are pretty open or guys so I can easily send that out without worrying about anyone being offended. But there could be some co-workers (considered friends) people who will be nosy enough to find the other collections and or sets and might get offended. So here are my options....vote

1. Full Public Rights - Only send out the link to friends and family (hmm maybe not a good idea to email mom). Everything will be accessible.
2. Full Public Rights - Send out the link to friends, family and co-workers I consider friends. Don't hide any of the sets or collections and let the chips fall where they fall. If someone is offended oh well.
3. Restrict Pics to Flickr Members Only - I can make all of my girl pics (pretty much everything or all in "Femina" collection) private or only viewable to people logged into their Flickr account. These means if you don't have a Flickr account you're not going to see the girlie pics which really sucks because I think some are pretty good. Also means no chance of accidentally offending someone who has a different perspective on things.

Basic Instructions for Flickr Page

Think of Flickr as a site to hold many folders and subfolders. Collections are the main folders and sets are folders that can be under collections.

• Collections – Will show you a group of sets that have been organized and put in a collection (many sets can be in a collection).
• Sets – Sets are a group of photos that have been organized and put in 1 particular folder (many photos can be in a set).
• Photostream – No particular order, just all the pictures that have ever been uploaded with the most recent ones showing up first.

When you click on the photo, you have a few options. By default you will always see the medium sized picture. If you want to see a larger or even the original picture you can click on “All Sizes”.

Digits - US Mobile
Digits - China Mobile
@ - email addy
Flickr - http://www.flickr.com/hotrodguru

C/N's: Guru has a ton of girl pics on his Flickr account and is now contemplating whether to make the pics private or keep public.

It's all harmless, non pornographic images. How anyone can be offended by female breasts is beyond me.

As someone I knew in school would say to the art teacher "It's art, not pornography Mr Jones!"

Your scenario is basically a variant of the myspace/facebook ordeal. If you having something that is even remotely quesitonable, it needs to be restricted if it can be connected back to you and "general public" people (co workers, friends of friends, etc) have access. Put the nekkids in a separate account, or restrict it somehow that you need to have permission to access that folder.

Bah, leave it open. You're sending the link so people can look at one collection. If they take upon themselves to view sets other then what you specified then they have no right to complain.

<---looked at all of them. The body art guy does some nifty stuff, I wish his models looked less like skanks though. The art would actually stand out on it's own, if the girls lost the bad hair make-up and jewelry.

I have no issues with boobies or any other naked naughty bits, it's not like it's intended as porn but rather art. Even if it was porn I personally wouldn't have an issue with it.

I think the China pictures are fantastic.

FC, it's hard to not disagree with you. I just always haven't been one to be too concerned with what people think of me...or being this politically correct. Hell, some of my pics are on display here at my hospital in a healing arts exhibit. And this isn't exactly myspace or facebook with me doing keg stands or streaking....I'm into photography and this is art!! (that's my stance and I'm sticking to it).

As I said above, can't disagree but people are always going to draw conclusions about other people. The tough part is if I do send out the link to co-workers, how do I walk the fine line of that personal/professional relationship.

I think this sums it up just the way I feel. Also my GF, who's a social worker had this exact same statement. If someone clicks on other links they can't say "I" offended them.
