Default Rough idle, loud ticking

I recently bought a 98 legacy gt limited. The people that had it hit a deer and obliterated right intake gear. I finally got the engine back in time, replaced the spark plugs and wires, as well as the cam sensor. The car seems to be idling rough at 1500 rpm's then drops to around 850 after 5 or so minutes.

The car has 217k miles on it and ticks pretty loudly (noise can be heard inside the car with the windows rolled up). It revs just fine and has descent power but I am a bit concerned about the noise. Any suggestions?

Does it tick when it is warm? How loud is the ticking?

It does tick when it's warm. The ticking is pretty loud. At first I thought it was lifters or bad spark plugs but the car doesn't have lifters to my knowledge and I replaced the spark plugs and wires. I can still hear all the engine noise pretty clearly inside the car with the windows up.

I'm not driving the car right now but the noise is deffinitely getting worse. I haven't even put 1 mile on the car since I bought it. I've just been running it to keep the battery charged. There also seems to be a "grinding" noise coming frrom somewhere under the hood too.

Check your oil level, at times when the oil level is lower than usual, the pump does not get as much oil and sometimes that may mean damaged bearings, mainly the rear main. If it is good, keep an eye on it to see if you are losing any over time, if so It could mean that it is seaping out at the main or burning off past the rings. Best bet is to take it to the dealer.

Hope this helps a bit.

If the cam sprocket was destroyed then you probably bent some valves.

It sounds like valve lash, I would check the valve clearance on your rockers and see if they are way off. Is it louder on either side of the heads? I did mine last night on one side and it took about 30-45 mins the other side is a little worse, you have to take out the battery and washer fluid tank to get to it.

it was the rod bearing in my video. if you think its not than feel free to come on over and move the piston up and down in the cylinder without moving the crank. or just shake that rod.

I can post the pictures of the metal in there too.

Check your oil dip stick, pull it out and look at the oil. If you see silver/gold shavings then your bearings are going or are gone (worn down = bad). When driving, the car should feel sluggish or lack power.

It could be piston slap, lifter tick, your valves. If it annoys you, then pull out the motor and tear it apart and inspect them.

The oil seems to be clean. I changed it last week and it helped a little. The noise seems to be equally loud on both sides of the engine. I know some of it is noisy injectors, but I also had a friend do the "dollar bill test" to see if it would trry to suck the dollar bill back in..... It's supposed to be a way of checking for a bent or stuck valve.

I would just drop another engine in and be done with it but a used EJ25 is hard to find for a low price
