Default Center Diff is about toast

So it looks like my center diff is on it's way out. It's a 2003 Baja Classic 5spd, non-turbo. Any ideas of what tranny's will swap in?

Forgive me for asking, but what exactly happened to toast your Center Diff?

I have a professionally welded RWD center diff conversion if you're interested in trying something interesting.

Making raccous noises while in gear. Been told pretty much that the bearings are shot. Trying to figure out if it'd be just worth my while to have someone replace it for me. One thread I saw said the diff is IN the tranny, another said that it's in the extension case. I'm AWD challenged. Gimme a Jeep and I'm all set, but this smoke/mirror AWD stuff has me loopy.

Anybody know the part number for the center diff?

Our AWD isn't that smoke-n-mirrory (LOL) at all. Front diff is in the trans and shares the tranny fluid (Manual only) the center diff bolts to the end of the tranny and it's either an open or viscous rear depending on the subie. (STIs are a whole other ball game) A forester trans will work but not an impreza. Bajas and Foresters have 4.44 ring/pinion ratios and pretty much everything else is 3.90 (there are a few exceptions) A transfer gear assembly should work from an impreza though. hope this helped. I did tons of research when my trans grenaded. Google Andrewtechautomotive. They made my trans nightmare go away.

What caused your transmission to go out?

Lovely ride home yesterday. All of a sudden there was a burning smell, then bind/release/bind/release/lather/rinse/repeat. *BANG* WTF was that!??!?!

Eased her into a local shop with a Subie guy, and left them to tend to her. This is gonna hurt like a Johnny Holmes enema.

Turns out it's the transmission, and not the diff. Needs a total rebuild. What transmissions will swap in? They want $1700 for the rebuild.

Moonzie, buddy, you've seen my youtube vid.... lol.
I drive the car hard. Borderline crazy on occasion.
I launched her on the stock trans with all the mods, VF39 @17 lbs intake exhaust tune etc. more than once.
It was a matter of WHEN not IF Hahaha.
My wife was PISSED. 4400 just for the 1-4 PPGs just under 6000 for the whole job
Now the trans is as close to bullet proof as I can get it.
I might spend the 900 or so for the transfer gear kit from PPG too....
Yayyyyyyyy modding perfectly good cars that aren't paid off yet!

See if they can buy a replacement already rebuilt. I don't know if it'd save money, but it's worth a shot. Best thing to do is hassle the local subie dealer:

Get them to give you the part number for a complete transmission for your car. Have them go through their computer system finding the models of car that the same trans was in.
