I don't live in one of the current counties with the rising assessment, though I got mine last year. My lot is worth more than the house!

Raped by MD is paying sales tax on a car again only because I'm switching plates from VA which has a lower cars sales tax. MD wants the difference.

mine went up 53k and some change

In three years . . . and in this economy. I think not. I bought the house 2 years ago and I seriously doubt I could sell it for what I paid for it. Even with the improvements I've made.

The homestead tax cap will help a little, but damn! I'm beginning to lose reasons of why I want to stay in MD. Can they find any other ways to tax us through the nose?

MOMs way of sticking it to us without "raising taxes" again.

My parents house sits on 3 acres (only 1 of if usable due to wildlife habitat) was 80K (assessed 4 years ago) is now 256,000 . The house didn't go up much but though.

Probably, just ask the residents of New York. Aren't they raising taxes there on non-diet soft drinks along with a ton of other things?

Of course, I can't think of any good reasons to live in either NY or MD....or Jersey, for that matter....

my grandparents moved from Maryland to West Virginia a few months ago. Money wasn't an issue for my grandfather........ but they were still "putting the screws to him" he said.

Sold his rental houses for $1 million (after taxes) and moved 7hrs away...

My goal is to end up in W. MD...but with taxes....it's almost just as easy to jump over to WV...as much as I'd hate to say I live in WV.

Not really surprising. If they actually assessed all the houses at what they were actually worth the state would probably be poor as hell.

That's why my family moved to WV, I lived in southern MD most my life taxes and the people got to be too much. WV does have it's downfalls.Yearly inspections, quarterly luxury and personal property taxes but, no emissions and all you really fail inspection for is bad tires tint or lightbulbs the inspection is like $13 so the shop owners can't dismantle the car like MD does. And on top of all that.I bought a house near everything Winchester,NOVA(my wife works in leesburg),Martinsburg and Frederick. They are all 25-30mls away there really isn't anything to do in this area!!

I asked the county comptroller if the county would be willing to buy my house at what they appraised it at. I got a somber "no" back. Hey, it made me feel better.

Yep, I loved living in Delaware. Still work there, so I get some of the sales tax benefits, but the inspection side and taxes were great.

We just got our assessments and they only went up $15k, implemented at $5k increases per year for the next 3 years. Not too bad.

I'm shocked at ours. The house we've been trying to buy its annual taxes doubled from 1890/yr to 4500 a year. Not sure if I still want the shack
