Chad,

Is this before of after you hook it up and slam it?

In stock trim, all Preludes are in GS, except for certain lowly non-VTEC models, which are in ES.

But if you're adding boost, we'll see you in SM!

I was getting concerned about going up against M3's, MR2's, 911's, and TT's... Not that they show up all that often, but if they did, the're tough to beat. - Kris

Ok... I'm not laughing anymore.. no ... really... why would they put both the RS and the WRX in the same class? Hmm.. call me a sore loser but that sounded like a politically influenced decision.

Why do you think STS is sooo popular with the 2.5RS Crowd?

They were getting their @ss whooped anyways in GS. The RS was the bastard child for auto-xing.

It didn't belong in GS (Not enough power) and didn't belong in HS (Too much power) they had to make a decision. They (SCCA) felt it was light enough and coupled with AWD, that it would be competitive (on the national level) in GS. So they threw it there.

I agree, GS is not where the RS belongs, but looking at the other classes, it doens't belong anywhere else...

SCCA decision making has always baffled me. Take last years decision to put the Ford Focus Z in H Stock. Guess who won all year?? Guess who was setting faster times then all of the ES competition. The Focus is killing in HS. For example if you drove a Hyundai Accent 1.3L: You'd be losing in HS.

Now I agree that if a TypeR shows up with his wits about him - you're going to a real hard time keeping up. Hopefully the WRX will be able to end the GS domination by the Type R.

But Mark's right - It's unfair to class the 230HP WRX in with the 165HP RS. It means that if you might lose to a Type R last year - this year you might lose to a Type R, and a WRX.

But on the flip side, like I mentioned in my first post - It's unfair to class the 3100lb WRX against 2000(ish)lb TT's, MR2's, 911's and powerful M3's. The TT matches the HP of the WRX.

So if we look at GS from an RS perspective - we would have lost anyway with the Type R. I agree - the RS gets the shaft in GS.

So we look into STS which is GREAT because now we can match the powerband, and use our KYBAGX's with coilovers to squash the competition. I ran STS all last year with the slushbox, and usually pulled off 5,6,7th place. And I know I can be 3 seconds faster with a clutch & RS (thank you Paul!) Plus the WRX is not able to run in STS or STR at all! Because Street Touring is a Normally Aspirated ONLY class.

Now KC - I was looking at the competition in DSP. If we get classed there with the RS in DSP, we could have some fun. Once we get the STi parts, turn up the boost, tweak the suspension, send $450 to Kumho Tire, Intake, Exhaust, bigger turbo, other mods - we could be a FORCE in that class.

Behold the power of Squeee!

Kris...

The WRX won't go into DSP with the RS, it would go into either CSP with the Type-R, or ESP with the GSX.

DSP would probably be out of the question...

Kris, I won't argue with you except for the weight of the TT. Keep in mind it's an Audi, so it's soft and cushy because people who buy Audis expect that. Hence, curbweight is 3274# for the 225hp AWD coupe, and a whopping 3473# for the 225hp AWD roadster.

Plus, everything I've read says the TT, just like every other Audi, understeers like a pig. (Except at high speed, when it oversteers out of control, but don't worry, they fixed that! )

So, I don't think the TT would be a problem at all. M3s, 911s, MR2s, S2000s, etc - now those are worth worrying about.

pat... LOL (the oversteer part)... i was going to post the curb weights of the TT but you beat me to it.

this is insanity! all reports so far have said that the WRX handles better than the RS and with more power its going to be very tough to beat it. well its going to be a very fun year.

Why did I think a German coupe was going to weigh less... Hrmm. I thought it was a lot lighter then that. (or it should be, anyway...)

Okay, okay, TT was a bad example - But the 911's, MR2's, M3's, made the point.

Speaking of bad examples... The S2000? - I left that off my list because if it's NON-EXISTANT torque curve. Cool car - yes. But I have yet to see one "kick ass" at autocross.

webkris,

Yes the S2000 has very low torque, BUT for auto-x once you get going (usually) you can select a certain gear so you will be at your car's RPM powerband. The S2000 is SICK over 6000 RPM. Yes, that is high, but once you get up there, that car is going to be FAST.

One other tid bit is that I haven't seen many S2000s running out there, so there isn't much data to be collected on how well they do...

Just my $0.02.

There was an S2000 at NHIS when I took the Novice school, and all the instructors practically fought it out to get in the drivers seat. Every single one of them loved the car, and it was a tight course too. The owner was a novice, so he was not too competitive, but he was learning almost as fast as the car was going.

Okay - Let me clarify, that I don't think the S2000 is a bad car. But that it's up with a lot of competition in AS, and I doesn't fall on my list of "top competitors in AS" - but I've been wrong before, and I'll be wrong again.

Hehehe - this will be cleared up pretty soon in April - Kris

I haven't seen much of the S2000 in events around here, but they did do OK I guess at the Nationals. An S2000 took first in both AS and AS-Ladies. Not too bad for the first year, and considering that there were only 7 of them out of 41 cars in AS.
