have a dohc ej25 that is giving my family issues. the engine is in a 1999 legacy gt wagon, but seems like there is more help to be had in impreza forums. here is the story. my sister drove the car that was bought new by my parents back in 1999, and now just purchased a 2009 impreza 2,5i premium.
the car now has new upper and lower hoses, new thermostat and radiator. the radiator did have a leak and needed to be done. symptoms, will sit and idle at normal temp just fine forever. the second you start driving it, the temp climbs and gets hot. there have been a couple trips taken in the car that the temp didnt go up. so it is a little temperamental. when the engines heat climbs the temperature going through the heater core diminishes. so the heat will be on while the car is sitting idling, and blow hot air, but when the engine temperature climbs, the heat blows colder air. the compression check shows one cylinder out of spec down to 120psi where the spec is 136-170 according to my haynes manual. i have had the engine out before, and have no problem changing it, as well as have another car that i can drive while working on it. does this seem like a head gasket issue? maybe a shot water pump? i am thinking there is some weird kind of blockage or reason that coolant is not circulating through the engine properly. however it also seems to me that the car doesnt take much to cool at idle. the car has 180k miles, and dont think dropping some cash into parts would be a horrible thing to get this car running again. thanks guys and sorry for the book, but wanted to explain as much as i could.

Head gasket, for sure. I'd check to make sure you don't have a bubble in the cooling system, but if one cyl is low on compression than it is extremely likely it's a blown HG.
Good luck! |

that is the expectation over on rs25 as well. i think its worth it to just try headgaskets and go from there.
