Consider the source of your information. How reliable is that source?

All the companies are struggling in this volitile market, Subaru included.

You and I may see the value of a well-styled Baja more in today's market moreso than the pre-Katrina (pre-spikey oil) days... and it's market territory that Subaru rightly owns.

While I'd love to believe something like this is true, but I'd have to know the source of the information before I sank my heart into it.

Subaru Stars New Baja for 2010?

Given the Baja's sales struggles (especially after its first year of production), I would be shocked (but pleased!) if Subaru were to introduce a Baja version 2.0. If they do, I hope they learned some lessons from the first attempt - i.e. marketing. To this day I still have people approaching me with questions about that Subaru that they have never seen before - and Bajas aren't all that uncommon in my area.

The baja--having a 'truck' in the lineup may be the only way Subaru can meet the MPG requirements for the CAFE standards. If you have a "truck" in your fleet of produced vehicles, the standards are lower.

Sort of a "When you can't get over the bar, lower the bar" philosophy.

Which is exactly why the outback and other Subaru models have been classified as a "truck" for the past 10 years or so even though they are just lifted station wagons...

Cool

I remember someone posted a thread a while back stating that Subaru was up to something in 2010 concerning a new BAJA!
This may be a continuation of that thread, or it could be something new. Don't know! And with Toyota now in the mix, I highly doubt it, as they don't need a competitor to their A-BAT concept vehicle. (Unless THAT will be the new BAJA!!!)
Keep it under 90, folks!

Ah, I see. New York just has them classed as passenger vehicles. I wonder what the Feds classify the vehicle as?

That's an interesting thought, given the cross marketing of the new Toyota / Subaru coupe!

Not so different styling language. The A-BAT even kind of reminds me of the new Tribeca - although the A-BAT is apparently quite small in real life.

I need a small truck that gets 25 mpg. A new baja would do nicely.
Even tha tacoma and frontier are kind of big these days.

this has a lot more of the design elements that the baja should have, and that the stx did have...
like the rear that folds all the way down, not a pass through!

Looks nice. I would definitely consider if it actually made it to the lots.

Whoa..... slow down guys/gals. I just talked to the GM of my dealership about this thread. Becker Subaru is the largest Subaru dealer in the Mid Atlantic Region. My GM went to Vegas to see the new Legacy and got to drive a RHD Legacy 2.0D from europe. Acording to him there are no plans for another foray into the truck market at this time. He did speculate that a H-6 diesel would be pretty easy to make now and that the Tribeca frame could work with some tweaking. It's more important for FHI to get more of the sedan market share right now. The new Leggy is SWEET though. He took a few pics with his camera phone.

Subie_Sleeper68,

Thanks for the heads up from a quality source. It is time to bring the diesel over, at least in limited numbers.

Aaagghhh, don't toy with people like that, lol. Our Baja is nearing 89k and will need replaced in about a year (we drive A LOT and really need a reliable, lower miles or at least under warr. vehicle). We've test driven a Forester-HATED it. I mean, like, ok, this test drive is over, get me out of this horrible thing hated it. Now we are left with either an Outback (ugh, station wagon) or a truck from another MFG like the Tacoma (ugh, terrible gas mileage). A new Baja would be perfect. I'd stretch the miles on the current critter to get a new one in a heartbeat (if it was an updated version of the current, not based on the horrible Forester or even worse, the Tribeca)....

I was at SOA HQ a few weeks ago and asked, they said they won't be making a baja replacement in the forseeable future. (official)

Unofficially, they've sold all the bajas they were going to, everyone who wants one has one or can get one.

I also highly doubt SOA would ever build another Baja, even though it would be a smart move if they actually ADVERTISED it once they had it. Ours has sold at least 3 other Bajas that I know of, and would have been more if they hadn't killed it off. People still ask what it is, SOA did not do a good job advertising them at all. I do find some consolation in the reports that the horrible Tribeca they replaced it with isn't selling well. With the redesign of the Impreza, I think they really limited their appeal to younger people without kids. I mean, they have station wagons (and I guess the fugly looking WRX/STI, but they look so weird now) and minivans now, no matter what *they* want to call them. I did find a lower mileage Baja T with leather that I'm semi-seriously considering (if it was like 200 miles away, not 500 or so miles away, I'd be much more serious-I'd like to test drive it before commiting to buying it!) now, instead of the station wagon outback. I found out the Taco is drive by wire, which does not interest me at all, especially after reading owners reporting it lurching while stopped as well as a few runaways (the newer s197 Mustangs had/have the same issues with their drive by wire systems). I have to wonder if the association with Toyota is going to really bring down Subaru's legendary quality and design. I guess time will tell.

I just feel like punching someone at SOA for deciding to make the Baja then not give it enough time or advertising to take off before cancelling it. The way other MFGs have been going, it was the only "minitruck" left-even the Ranger got bigger, aand got terrible gas mileage along with it's size.

It has nothing to do with work, I did the 48 hours of Tri-State drive for ACS. I touched the 22b by accident, and wasn't shot, tazed, or maced.

Unfortunately?..

I've driven a few DBW vehicles over the past two years and none of them seem to have the same instantaneous response as my Baja T. When I mash the accellerator it goes. Instantly. This was one of my concerns that I had before I bought the BajaT - so I tried it out on one from a dealer and it acted the same way as mine does.

I've hit the gas on several Fords, Chevys, Nissans - and most of them have a fraction of a second pause while the computer tries to figure out what you want - no matter how light or hard my accelleration is.

I should have worded that to say because of the problems I've read about with it on that model. I can't say as I've read anywhere on owners forums about Bajas running away (going full throttle by themselves) or lurching forward with the brakes fully applied like I have on the Taco. I was actually poking around some Tacoma forums looking to see if anyone found good ways to up the mileage on them and ran into a very long thread discussing this. Apparently it is well known amongst V6 AT Tacoma owners that the cruise way over compensates for even slight inclines and they tend to jump forward while stopped. I know two people who had their Mustangs do the run away thing and I don't have any interest in experiencing that, especially given that if we bought a truck, we would use it to tow. Imagine trying to control that with an enclosed trailer loaded with a car! No thanks (Our car trailer has sat, used for storage, since we traded our Bronco for the Baja and it looks like it will continue to do so). I just hope that Toyota doesn't influence Subaru in a way to bring that kind of quality to it's line. I'd rather see it work the other way around, with Toyota learning from Subaru. But I'm not holding my breath.

Since SOA are idiots (say what you want, but I am sure the Baja would have sold much better had more people known about it), we are left with few options to replace our current Baja. We can try to find a low mileage MY06 Baja with an in service date of less than 3 years ago so we can slap a Subaru warranty on it and get at least 3 more years of Baja ownership. We can suck it up and buy a station wagon (Outback). Or, maybe go from wence we came and buy a Ranger or F-150 (not likely, their gas mileage is really, really bad). I'm just not excited about the options we have currently like I would be if there was a new Baja based on the current Outback available. We need AWD (with decent ground clearance) or 4x4 to get us some pf the places we go, so it limits options. I know it's only transportation, but we're car people and the idea of owning a station wagon just isn't appealing to me. But, there's that awesome AWD and heated seats at least...Blah.

I thought yellowblaze was against drive by wire, which is cleared up in the post above. For the record, my Baja T also had great throttle response.

Stock throttle response was acceptable.

Tactrix cable and Mr. Tuner guy have made it great. Plus, when I put on my WRX pedals, I could just remove the whole gas pedal assmbly and do it on a workbench. 2 or 3 bolts holding it in, and an electrical connector to disconnect.
