Default Speaker Sellers are at it again in DFW

Sorry to bother - but be warned,
Of the local Audi group, 11 people have been individually approached by 3 young white guys trying to sell speakers and/or car audio equipment out of an SUV. Black Tahoe with FL tags and White Explorer with tags unknown. This past weekend the exercise in futility (on their part) came to a head when one of the guys said he only had $5. He was corralled so pulled a knife instead of his wallet. The passenger in the SUV pulled a gun, took the money and ran the redlight to get away. Seems to center around Addison and Plano but also Las Colinas. Most of the encounters have been along Preston Road. I have first hand experience, was in traffic at Keller Springs and Tollway when they signaled me to roll down the window. "Extra Speakers for sale", "Paperwork", etc. They weren't too happy when I said no. Up till this past weekend all of the encounters were harmless, if uncomfortable. Hopefully they aren't escalating their tactics.

This seems to definitely apply to people driving a certain type of car so I thought I would let everyone here know.
Thanks.
James

A friend of mine bought a car battery from a guy at a gas station on Rutland once under similar conditions. Didn't fit his car and it still had a battery cable attached.
Just a suggestion, a firm, but friendly no thanks would be a lot more effective than a knife or gun. Remember if he has a gun he thinks of it as an option. If you pull a gun or any weapon, him using his gun may feel like a necessity. Better to let him maintain the belief that he has control as he is then more predictable. But that is just how I do things.

It has been about 3-4 years since I have been approached. It happened about 4 times though in about 6 months. Never any pressure, just scammers trying to sell cheap crap. I had a friend who bought some for $200, they were crap. I can't seem to remember the brand name but I saw a set in the paper for like $600. Some poor soul thought he was going to make a buck off his purchase...Great to hear they are back, they must think people forgot.

We get hit by them all the time in Irving/Las Colinas. In our case a white Esclade with colorado plates, scruffy looking white dudes. It's become a running joke at work....

"If you belive that, do you want to buy some speakers?"

Man, I hope folks aren't just whippin' out their piece just to say "No"!!! Unless the punk comes at you with a weapon, there's no call for going there - not to mention that, unless you feel your life is in immediate danger, it's illegal to brandish a weapon.

However, I wouldn't suggest being a victim, either - of course, if it's only over $5, it probably isn't worth your life, so WRXfiend still has a point....

<sigh> looks like it's time to get off my lazy ass and go get my carry permit - haven't had one since I moved here from Atlanta. At least in GA, you could have the thing in the car w/o a permit. Here, I can't even do that....
