This is OpenECU tuning. Matt doesn't have a Cobb Tuning license.

I have been posting about this for a while. If anyone is interested in coming let me know and I will make sure to keep you updated.

The protocol is different. You need the OpenPort 2.0 cable in order to flash 08+ CanBus cars.

There are a bunch of use using it in the area. Basically you use free tuning software and a laptop to interface with the ECU instead of the overpriced code reader and software that Cobb uses. Either way it is an ECU reflash, it is just a matter of how it is accomplished.

Check out www.romraider.com and you can learn all about it.

A lot, if you have a set of bawls and are not a car hypochondriac with a nipple fetish you can take advantage of it. You don't have to tune it yourself per se. There are maps put there and guys like Matt that can hook you up with a map for a fee. My car is tuned that way and it is pretty strong. . You have to cut the accessport apron strings so if you are afraid of that stay away. If you have a laptop and a tactrix cable though the world is your oyster if you are not afraid to dive in.

If you are getting tuned by Matt you need no knowledge. If you want to do it yourself you need a lot of knowledge. That being said you can also purchas OTS maps to run on your car too. All that you would need to do is get the map flashed on the ECU.

You don't understand my life, stuff I own, it just breaks. my material possessions, they just hate me. Through no fault of my own. With the wedding and the newly purchased house, I don't have money to drop a new engine in if something blows up! I want to do a compression check, if I do that and everything turns up good, then I'll be relieved and pound on the car a bit, trust me.

Anyone have any recommendations on a good/cheap compression tester?

Yes, someone else's...there are probably a dozen or more in this group. No real need to buy your own unless you plan on testing your compression compusively for some odd reason.

I can see myself doing that actually.

The problem, as you know it as well, is being so far away from the centralized group, it's hard for me to get, borrow, and lend stuff out easily.

Some more potential candidates. Any of these stick out?

http://www.rs25.com/forums/vbclassif...?do=ad&id=4717
(the R-Title doesn't bother me so much except I'm concerned about frame problems)

http://www.rs25.com/forums/vbclassif...?do=ad&id=1441
(AT doesn't matter considering the size of this sawp. It's all coming out anyway so it can be converted fairly easily. Bit of a drive though...)

http://www.rs25.com/forums/vbclassif...?do=ad&id=1579
(same deal with the AT. This might be the most likely candidate..)

My search is starting to expand in area. I'm also expanding it to include cars that are OK cosmetically. I'll pay more for an OK car and I can worry about paint/widebody later. My main goal is to get a turbo car back on the road in the shortest time possible.

Opinions on any of those vehicles?

Finally pinned myself down and decided on the new wheels today. Picked the SSR Type F 18x9.5 +40 in silver. They'll take 4+ wks to arrive, so I have time to pick the rubber. I'm thinking the new RE-11s.

Also ordered RCE Tarmac 2s coilovers with Vorshlag camber plates, and those will take 4+ weeks to come.

Ordered Whiteline sways F/R, some bushings, etc. These will come sooner I think. Thank me now - I just propped up the economy a bit more

Me too. Although these are listed and pictured on their website, when we contacted SSR they are not making them now, nor do they have any idea if/when they will. I'm thinking powdercoating is an option.

Oh,,,, yes I do. Your stuff doesn't break any more or less than mine or anyone's . You just stress over it more than average. Everyone is different so no biggie. It is your car. if you decided to turn it into a planter it's your business. I for one do not think that a good compression test will inspire you to mod. I think you will be like. "Yeah, it's all good, I am gong to make sure it stays that way"

no, lack of funding dictates the mods right now. Believe me, if I had the extra money, I wouldn't worry about it, I would just pop a new engine in if something went bad. Honestly, I don't really feel my car needs anything.

As it sits, a stage 2 STi, with the suspension that I have, it's a very nice car. So, what, I mean, I can run it at a high 12 second pass, don't need it to be faster, it handles well, and is more comfortable then a stock ride. I never planned on doing a 'full build' on the car.

That's what it all boils down to in the end, right, cash? Getting back good results won't change much, except I won't be afraid to beat on the car a bit more. These aren't baseless concerns, my car has done a couple weird things in the last few months. I would just like piece of mind, I know things can happen at any time, but I would like to avoid having to replace the engine in the car right now, I'm probably going to have to hvae the syncros redone this summer, which is going to more then blow my whole car budget for this year.
