Default power steering fluid question

I just did my own 90k service this weekend on my 03 wrx (86,000 miles). when i looked at the power steering fluid, I was at the cold low mark (with the car cold of course). When I was at the dealer they told me to use "subaru atf-hp".
Is this the proper fluid? I didn't realize it till i started to pour it in, it was red instead of what was in the car orginally.

I read unabomber's http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...steering+fluid

but still a little confused.

thanks for any feedback

Yes, the color of Subaru ATF/Power steering fluid is red. I recently replaced the power steerring fluid in my 02 with subaru ATF fluid. I wouldn't use anything else.

the manual says i need Dexron III or the ATF hp which I can't use since i will need to order this from a dealer and would take long for delivery.

sorry about that really . reading up on this community has made me become overly too cautious on what products to use and relied on what other people (majority) are using. anyways, i will look up more info on mobile 1 syn. thanks

Don't let me stop the flamefest.

But when/how often do you consider steering fluid replacement is necessary? I have had my Impreza for 10 years and don't think ever replaced that fluid. Also, the service manual doesn't have a procedure for draining it other than removing the pump...?

Maintenance FAQ.....read it....at the top of this forum.

And to you n0bbs: fluid color has ZERO to do with anything ever. Read that and remember.

Thanks for the pointer, Unabomber.

The FAQ addresses replacement interval, but no pointer for the procedure. I must be missing something pretty obvious. Any pointer for that?

Suck pour suck pour suck pour suck pour is how to do it. Leave the cap off, have the front end on jackstands and whip the wheel L R L R L R L R both with the car on and off to work out air bubbles.

Least that's what I remember....do a search and if you can find a thread with better advice, PM me and I'll add it to the Maintenance FAQ.
