Default Bigger Vibration on Startup

I got rear ended on Saturday (everyone's ok) by an gen 3 integra doing maybe 30kph (not too sure but his airbag didn't deploy). When he hit me he went under my rear bumper mostly before punting me forward.

When I started my car on Sunday morning I got a louder start and alot more vibration, so much vibration before warmup that my gear stick was shaking side to side. Once the car warmed up the vibration and louder sound was gone. When revving/driving the car a slightly different exhaust note could be heard, it wasn't really louder but it had a wooshing/blowing kind of sound on top of the normal sounds.

What I think happened was when the accident occured and the integra went under my back bumper a bit is that he hit the exhaust and broke something. I had a quick peak under and it didn't look like there was any visible damage ie no crushed muffler, broken hangers, or drooping pipe.

Any ideas on what that new vibration/sound at start up could be?

Sounds like you're on the right track with the exhaust, it may have been moved (or bent) close enough to another part of the car so on start-up it vibrates against that part. Once it warms up, expansion may be moving it enough away such that it no longer vibrates.
I'm having a similar problem with a poorly fitted trailer hitch touching the muffler

I'd get the car up on some ramps for a better inspection.

That's the strange part the sound that I was hearing on startup was more of a bassy note rather than a ping (which would be metal on metal). What I was thinking was a bolt somewhere along the exhaust got broken and there was a leak. Perhaps one that connects the midpipe and the exhaust manifold...will have to get the car up on a ramp to see. Although I might just take it into the body shop to get everything sorted.

i had a similar problem, i backed into a wood retaining wall about a foot high, for a while i noticed some rattling under the car, i looked and a flange was hitting the heat shield, so i just bent the shield up a little bit more and it was fine. every now and then it still hits once or twice when i get on it, but it doesnt bother me. and the shifting of the exhaust probably broke the seal on the flanges, cuz i do notice a slight hiss when im out of the car when its on, and i had it on a lift at school and noticed some carbon on the flanges so i know its leaking, probably the same thing is goin on with you

edit: i just noticed, we have the same car, same color, lol yours 5 spd or auto?

ah, yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking too...hopefully it's not the manifold to block connection, that would really not be good... could possibly write the car off if that's the case (thinking worst case scenario here).

My 2.5i is a 5spd wagon had it for about 6 months and love it!

Strange...the vibration seems to have reduced quite a bit / gone away...perhaps it is temperature dependant as it has been quite a bit warmer here the last few days

first off our manifold connects to your heads. you have a boxer engine. secondly ? write off your engine for a bent exhaust? im confused

My bad, you're totally right...I never payed attention to photos of manifolds/headers on our car to where they attach.

I don't know where that sound/vibration is coming from. My concern was when I got hit that the force that the exhaust saw maybe got transferred up the exhaust piping through the manifold and broke a bolt at the the head to manifold connection. Was worried that a broken bolt in the head would write the car off (kind of sounds silly to me now that I think of it).

Don't think that's the case though, had someone listen under the hood on startup and revving the engine a bit and there was no discernible sound other than the normal ones. Could be the midpipe to manifold connection...time will tell once I get it to the bodyshop to fix my bumpers. The one nice thing is that there is the slightest burble in the exhaust note.

all exhaust manifolds connect to the heads! its just the lay out of our engine thats messing with your head.

most engines have a block and a head on top of it = like that. ours have 2 heads that lay like I {} I.

if you broke a bolt on it , the hole just needs to be re tapped . far from shot lol.

Haha, yeah I suppose you are right again! Brain doesn't want to work lol

I doubt its the head/manifold connection...if anything I'll bet it's either a broken bolt or possibly a weld at the midpipe to manifold connection.

with the engine cold, put the car up. have a helper . get under your car , have helper start car. look for leaks . listen for leaks. have helper hold hand over exhaust pipe , you wont stall the engine, just have the helper hold his hand there to create serious backpressure.

look for condensation leaking / bubbling. if you see it you have a leak.
