Default 05 WRX exhaust smells like burning corn all the time...Help!

I just purchased a 2005 WRX and have a few questions I hope you all could help with. It's got a 3" turbo back exhaust, APC fmic, greddy BOV, short intake and I a flashed ecu (I don't know what system was used...I have no ownership history).

When I start it, there's often a little bit of blue smoke that comes out the exhaust(problem 1). Problem 2 is that the exhaust always smells like burning corn (that's the best way I can describe it). I am very famililar with exhaust smells. It doesn't smell rich and it doesn't smell like burning oil and it doesn't smell like coolant. The exhaust is white (evaporation...I live it -20 weather right now (MN)) and not blue after the initial puffs after I start it. So that seems normal. But it reeks. Is that because it's running catless? Or should I be looking for something else? There's no oil in the IC or lines... But I'm thinking it could be a bad turbo seal that allows some blow by when I start it in the morning and that's where the blue comes from?

I haven't taken it overs 4k rpms. It's got a fresh tank of 91oct...and that didn't change the smell when i filled up. It's got fresh oil (not over-filled). There's also a little bit of up-and-down (not in-and-out) play in the turbo shaft. I've ordered another turbo.

Where's the smoke possibly coming from and why does the exhaust smell like burnt corn all the time? Are these things I should expect because it's catless?

THanks, Jorn

Mine smells like tortillas because of the wrap and paint I used on my latest set of "PnPed" manifolds and custom crossover. The exhaust gasses coming out of the tailpipe smell like unburned gasoline.

Possible that the previous owner did some manifold and paint work pre-turbo?

No, there's no paint work pre-turbo. Maybe for the first 56,000 miles of it's life they were running e-85(haha)... it's got a fresh full tank of 91oct and the smell is still there.

Anyone else having a different smelling exhaust (aside from it burning rich) when removing the Cats? Or should i be looking somewhere else in the car's system to blame?

Not that I'm aware of. I haven't fully gone through the car. I've driven it a hundered miles and it's in the shop getting the infamous cold fuel leak taken care of. It's the subie's first month in MN. Previously lived in balmy Hawaii.

From the time I spent with it, I couldn't believe how much the exhaust reeked and was concerned about the puff of blue at startup..

PCV? Turbo?

Anyone have ideas?

So if your car is tuned perfectly, it won't smell unlike a catted vehicle?

i would suggest running no less than 93 octane w/ your mods. I doubt that has little if anything to do w/ your smell, just an fyi...

catless exhaust will never smell like a catted car (unless you're comparing it to a catted car whose cat isnt working, i.e. burned out). however, if tuned correctly you can get most of the smell from unspent petrol away.

have been around many a catted & catless subies, never smelled corn. too bad we dont have smell-o-vision so you can show us what you mean.

I don't think the bad smell is b/c you are running 91 octane gas, it probably would still have the smell if you run 93, it was just an ot comment.

You don't have a Shell station or a Mobil in a town that size? I have not been to a shell or a Mobil that didn't have 93...
