I just picked up a 98 forester and i am in need of a engine for it. Im pretty sure it needs the ej25 motor. Im new to subarus, but im very willing to learn as much as i can. If anyone has any useful information for me, or where i could find a good motor in the area, or if maybe anyone has one for sale, that would be great! Thank you.

scavenge the part outs! you could run an NA sti motor with a tune. should be pretty tough for a beater.

OK. If i looked for a wrx motor for it, is there a certain year i should look for so it drops right in? And would i need a whole swap like wiring, ecu ect ect?
Im really hoping to just keep it simple and drop in the same motor. And im not lookig to spend more than $1000 on getting a new motor.

Based on those conditions, I'd suggest you just keep looking for a replacement 2.5NA motor.

A WTB post in either the regional or the general classifieds area should generate some offers. There are probably quite a few people who've done RS -> WRX/STI swaps that still have their old motor around.

+1
I picked up an EJ251 (NA 2.5 motor) for $300, and came with a bunch of left overs from a swap. Can't beat that. Another NA 2.5 is your best bet in terms of labor and cost.

Try to find a motor from a 1998 Forester, Impreza or Legacy (EJ25D). That was the only year for a DOHC 2.5L engine. Any EJ engine will "fit", but anything else will require some wiring.

Also take a look at...
www.rs25.com
www.subaruforester.org
www.sl-i.net

Yes, head gaskets are a problem with the older 2.5L engines.
