Contact Andrewtech Automotive here in Maryland, best place to get a transmission rebuilt or swapped. They're here on the boards.

I drove my Mr2 around for a few years with no 2nd gear, its no biggy, ride the rpm up to 4-5k and shift to third, it will still be smooth.

It may be no biggy as far as smoothness in driving goes, but I hope that at minimum you would change your fluid in the transmission, or better yet take it out and get the shards of gear(s) out of the transmission case. Leave those metal pieces in the transmission and you'll be looking at an entire transmission instead of a few gears.

You really have no business giving such advice. His car is geared totally differently than yours. While you could arguably get away with that on your car because it's geared differently, the earlier WRX's will drive like crap skipping a shift from 1st to 3rd gear.

Beyond that there's all kinds of schrapnel going through that transmission right now. A mainshaft and 1st and 2nd gear for a WRX is about $550 in parts. If he keeps driving it and runs that crap through all his ther gears and into his bearings he could be looking at $2000-2500 in parts alone. Maybe that ws fine for your POS MR2 where you could go to a junkyard and grab another $300 gearbox, but on a WRX even a junkyard takeout is close to $1000.
