Default WRX Rack and Pinion going bad??

What are the chances that a 04 wrx rack and pinion is going bad at 54K miles. I have had the inner tie rod connecter fixed thinking that that was causing the clunk in the front driver side wheel. The shop told me last night that it could possibly be the rack and pinion. Does that sound right? The noise will happen when I am making a turn, and it sounds almost like something is loose. Sometimes while going straight I will hear it, but not often. Any opinions guys. The car is a DD and it also has whiteline steering rack bushings. It has made this sound ever since I bought it, so last 20K.

One (highly recommended) suspension shop recommended it could be the lower ball joint eventhough when the car was looked at there were no signs of it going bad. Could it be ?

my car made popping noises during low speed sharp turning. It was the wheel bearings getting chewed up.
