[quote=belaud;36767860]Wiring le sub in.

thats funny on sunday I went up to my buddies place and helped him wire his 2007 white STi for sub and amp and head unit. He took all his seats out though so it was super easy.

How did it go on your car? I need to wire my 2012 sti soon

Had my engine detailed to match the cleanliness of my powder coated intake manifold

Also debadged the rear except for the WRC manufacturer's champions badge

And mounted my fire extinguisher. Rear seats still fold down

Lol. Yep. I lasted exactly one summer with my white Advans and then powdercoated them a dark bronze. It looks amazing when they're clean but the second you drive on them or get brake dust on them, not so much.

Look awesome though. How much of a pull did you need in the rear to get them to fit?

^ You have the wrong background emblem on your screen, you should do something shout that...

Looks good though... I wanted to do the same in my Impreza, but I'm happy with the stereo so far, so it's too much hassle to swap it over.

I had to use an aftermarket amplifier to make the sound work (i'm not into audio) and it was the best investment of the whole project. The speaker quality is phenomenal compared to what it used to be.

Sorry, I should've clarified... I've replaced the entire stereo system (except for the headunit, which was aftermarket and came with the car), and I'm running an iPod interface through the H/U. What I meant to say was that I wouldn't get much of an improvement in sound quality by going to a CarPC, and the hassle of doing the install just isn't worth it at the moment. I've also got a remote for the iPod interface that functions almost identically to the iPod controls themselves, so I can change between songs without taking my eyes off the road. It also has a display (separate from the H/U) so I can see the current artist/track, and I can switch between artists and playlists and such.

I've done the opposite. I left the entire sound system alone, and put a nice Clarion 4 channel amplifier in. I have surround sound, and the quality is such a large upgrade that I am no longer considering upgrading speakers at all in the car. I paid $70 for my APX4241 on craigslist. I think upgrading your amplifier (not using your stock/aftermarket HU amp) will make a big upgrade in sound.

Lol, maybe I should've just covered it all at first... I'm running a Harman-Kardon Drive & Play iPod interface through a cheap Freeway deck (which I'll probably replace with a Pioneer unit), an older four-channel Sony amp bridged into two channels to power a pair of JBL GTO speakers in the front doors, and an Alpine monoblock powering a 10" sub. Everything is powered through relays off dedicated lines coming from a fuse block, which is directly wired to the battery. I did all the writing and install myself, most of it in the backyard while I was recovering from a broken leg...

It ain't fancy, it ain't pretty, and it's definitely not hifi, but I'm happy with it.

Your car being a wagon gives you the convenience of sticking an (older) laptop under the trunk liner. You just need to configure the bios to wake on power or use an external adapter that turns the laptop on when the ignition is turned on.

Some times I doubt myself for going through all the trouble of getting a CarPC in there. But it really comes down to what your needs are. FYI, there is an Ubuntu app that will run on an android device! So that may be an alternate solution.

Here is something really cool that my co-worker told me about if you can care less about playing music from a disc.

Cool. I had the evaluation version for a while but I didn't like it as much as I liked the 3.5 that I tried before. I am going with Open Mobile and just learning their code at the moment.

Yeah but i didn't want to run extra long cables so i put my laptop under my car seat. It's mounted on top of the bottom of my seat. That way any VGA cable was fine, my GPS cable was long enough, my mini usb cable etc. Also there are two vents for HVAC that run under there that allow the air to move.

What's good about open mobile? I love centrafuse it's super easy to use, attractive and been reliable. Bluetooth works great, i like how the on screen calling comes up even when i'm navigating through windows.

That first part was for pope-face. It not that much work to put in a pc if he just make a compartment in the trunk.

I'd go with centrafuse if they didn't mess up their iPod integration for me. Good thing about Open Mobile is it's open source (and using Microsoft .Net technology). And for the programmer in me that means I get to tell it to do exactly what I want for my carpc. But for anyone who wants functionality straight out of the box without too much configuration, centrafuse is hands down the winner.

RE3: Yeah, I know what you mean, it wouldn't be that hard to put the laptop in... I actually had all the gear ready to set it up (including a GPS tracker), but I realized the laptop I had didn't have enough hard drive space to store all my music, and I don't think I can replace it as it's a stripped-down SSD. I'll need to find another cheap laptop to go this route, but there's other stuff I need to spend the money on right now... Like new brakes.

I'll probably use a version of Ubuntu though, as you mentioned, or some form of Linux. I was considering learning how to build a custom OS with LXDE and OpenBox (or something similar), but haven't gotten into it yet. Just another project that I don't have time for...
