Default SZ55 STI wont hit target boost, not EVEN CLOSE!

ok sooo heres some back gorund

Bought an SZ55 turbocharger deadbolt rebuilt it, sent it to me. I broke it in, never hitting more then .5 bar.

Now for some fun, nope guess not, car refused to make more then 7-8psi (its suppose to be 21psi) WELL ****!

So i thought... hmmm maybe the map isnt set up for 21 psi like its suppose to be. Looked into it.. it is set up for it. Weird i thought, but decided to FORCE it to make 21 psi by sticking a manual boost controller in line...

HOT DAMN! we're in business now. The thing went like hell and scared the **** out of me... but whats this... slowly it stopped making the boost pressure i wanted it too...interesting... and when it did make the pressure, it didnt feel quick... So ok i thought... maybe i have a vacuum leak... nope. Maybe my boost controller is a POS (even though it IS turbosmart) so i took that out of line... yup theres the 7-8psi i again but nothing more. I ran the line complelely off the waste gate and turbo... STILL only 7-8 psi.... (this broke off my gfs TD04 on her WRX before and it went to like 22 psi so i thought i might be worth a try)

So im out of ideas... the turbo still spools great and spins freely just isnt making the right power..

BTW... i dont have the restrictor pill in the line anymore which i think COULD be the problem but wouldnt taking the line right off the wastegate FIX that issue.

My second guess is maybe the wastegate actuator is broken or maybe just one tight enough..

PLEASE HELP!

just borrowed the restrictor pill from my GF's WRX and it didnt help it at all..

EDIT: Also just turned of the tightness on the wastegate arm... NOTHING

I had kind of the same problem and this is what my tuner recommended

Quote:
Try this. Plug the line that comes off the compressor to the mbc. Go for a drive, but you have to be VERY careful because you have no boost control at all. Get on the gas and see how it spools. Be prepared to let out before 18psi. It will continue to climb this way so you have to be careful. That will let you know if it's the exhaust or boost leak, or if it's a bcs/wastegate issue
My turbo spooled fine without the line but with the line it doesn't spool at all. So I took my MBC apart and installed a heavier spring and now I am running like a champ. Maybe you have a preturbo leak, I know I have one .

No i HAVENT gotten a protune for this yet. Its only been on the road for like a week and it was basically spent breaking it in.

I still have to get it inspected at Canadian tire before i can put my front mount intercooler on, I only have a 02 WRX TMIC on it now. I dont want to protune until i have the FMIC on.

So i did what u said and i unhooked the line... it only SLIGHLY increased the amount of boost (9psi). So it must be a pre-turbo exhaust leak then?

Wellll i pulled the codes off the ECU now that i went and picked up an accessport from the ladys house.

I have

P0301
p0302
P0304
?????

I know the first 3 are misfires as i had gotten them before on my VF22 EJ207 swapped GC8.

But the car doesnt idle like its misfiring, as well it has consistant power through-out the RPM range, it just isnt making more then 7-8psi, and it seems to take a while to spool that (4500rpm)

I went to Midas and had them weld my headers where they connect to each other (thought they might be leaking there) as well as had them check for other leaks. Nothing.

yes im running the TMIC... The car is my daily driver and i needed it mobile. I dont beat on it (although it has seen full boost once or twice) But I am generally conservative with it. I cant cut my bumper beam all to hell to put the front mount on until i get it inspected and I need things fixed and running properly before i can do that.

Well there is your problem......... You are boosting your car and turning up the boost with a manual boost controller? Also, on a wrx tmic.. wow I am speechless. Say goodbye to your engine, because I think you just ****ed it up.

It has a well built base map. I didn't kill the motor. The car runs ad drives great, no sputtering, no spun bearings, i know what all these sound like and how the car would be running if it was anything that serious. Thanks for the help though

as well i only turned the BOOST up with the manual boost controller to hit the PROPER target boost. Its not that the map is set for 12psi and im running it to 21psi. At 21 psi my AFR was still 11.2-11.4. I have an AEM wideband.

Explain WHY the intercooler would KILL it? You can run a straight pipe from the turbo to the throttle body with a BPV bolted to it and it would still be fine.

Best reading all day!

BTW, a motor can sound and feel perfectly healthy and still be down on compression and not hit target boost.

You have a basemap on your car and you are flooring it. You have a custom setup. There can't possibly be a safe base map for you to run.

Because the wrx intercooler is way too damn small for a sz55. If you are not hitting target boost why don't you check for leaks and other things. Don't just get a manual boost controller and turn it up. Seriously, what are you doing? You should've just gave me your setup. You're just going to blow your motor and waste money.

I don't care if I get points, but you are a ****ing idiot.

reset your ecu and pray to god your misfires didn't make you lose compression or bend a valve or that you didn't lose a ring land

go see your tuner/mechanic and stop messing with your car, you are in over your head

reset your ecu first, but now you have these misfire problems; idk man you are in need of some serious assistance

please don't mess up that awesome motor you've got, that would be a total shame

Im not going to report you or anything lol. I had a basemap built by a tuner.

I know its not SAFE but its not like i was kicking the **** out of it. I hit full boost a few times (like 5). I checked for boost leaks already btw.

a boost controller doesn't turn the boost up. it limits boost.

do you honestly think that 02 wrx tmic flows enough air for your sz55? you should do what i bolded. you'll probably hit target boost since the small tmic will no longer restrict airflow going into the intake manifold.

I reset the ecu after i pulled the codes and drove it around the block... no codes came back. Im going to get a compression test done on it tomorrow. It's not burning any oil btw, nore is it smoking so i dont think i lost a ringland... but who knows

i love you, seriously if i was gay i would **** the **** out of right now. Put the APS on and everything is back to normal / better then ever... It broke free in second...

That being said, I'm going to finish getting this map tuned before i play with the car anymore. I'm only 22 and everything I have ever earned has gone into my cars and I probably would have jumped off a bridge if i blew this up. Thanks so much, and everyone, I know it was dumb to boost on a basemap, but thanks for all the replies anyway, they really did help me trouble shoot even though you were being sarcastic in some cases.

I hope this will help anyone else who does something this dumb.

The CN tower would get the job done nicely.

Please don't boost your car anymore until you get it tuned. BTW, when your motor goes, I'll buy the SZ55 off of ya.
