Default Febraury 2009 Fastrack - new class proposal

Link: http://scca.com/documents/Fastrack/0...k-feb-solo.pdf

Quote:
The SAC offers the following classing change proposal package for member comment:
- Move models currently in B Stock into C Stock, merging the two classes.
- Move models currently in A Stock into B Stock.
- Move the following models into A Stock:
BMW Z4 M Coupe/Roadster (06+)
BMW M3 (08+)
Lexus IS-F
Mercedes C63 AMG
Porsche 911 Turbo (95-97)
Porsche 911 (98-04)
Porsche Cayman S (05+)
Porsche Boxster S (05+)
The SAC would like member input regarding whether to include the following models in this move:
Chevrolet Corvette (99-04)
Lotus Esprit Turbo (96-04)
Mazda RX-7 (93-95)
The SAC is considering the base C5 Corvette and RX-7 as lower-cost entries that could increase participation. The relative SCCA Fastrack News February 2009 Page 11 age, parts availability, and car availability are of particular concern. Additionally, the SAC is requesting comment on whether to include the Corvette Fixed Roof Coupes (FRC), as they were only produced in 1999 and 2000 with production numbers around 6000.
This class proposal seems better structured than the previous one. The real "losers" here are the BS/CS people, but these classes are so close in performance that combining them makes sense imho.

Make sure you get those letters in this week folks.

It's been brought to some peoples attention that the SEB waits for as llittle as a week 'for member comment' before things are sent up to the BOD.

They meet by conference call usually the week after the Fastrack goes out...

Hence my poll I created a few weeks ago... those that wait 2+ weeks (over 1/2 of those that write in) may not get their voices heard.

This goes with *anything* out for member comment for solo.

I've written e-mails to dgill, the BOD and my area rep to have them impose a 1 month wait before things are sent up as it's evident that less than 1/2 of those that write letters only do so on the 1st week. More than 1/2 take more than a week to send in their letters.

Sure, some changes take longer... but there's no mandatory waiting period before items get sent up... and it could be as little as a week.

99-04 Corvettes? I'm assuming they mean '97-04.

I would like that.

The rx7 stock has the same horsepower , torque , weight and weight distribtion as a S2000. Why do they insist on classing it with 911s and C5s?!?! It's time to send the FD down a class (to the new BS or to the old AS).

Pre-Z06 days, it beat the C5 in SS 3 of 4 years. Personally, I'm writing that it should stay in SS. Those cars are hard to find stockish and hard to maintain.

I'm not worried about the FD RX-7 as much as I am about the '95-'97 911 Turbo...how did that get included?!

Chike, what do you think about BS/CS merge?

I'm still not sure what I think of this whole thing. I would seriously consider a C5 if this went through, but I'm not really sure what is wrong with the classes as they sit now.

In stock form, with AWD, they don't turn A Boxster/Cayman will outhandle them, no problem there! You can fix the Turbos in SP trim, but not stock, from what I hear...

I didn't need another reason to keep drooling on the green Cayman S Sport sitting on my dealer's showroom floor... sigh!

The thing that's wrong is there are a lot of cars that are deemed too fast for AS and are stuck in SS. Sports cars and the like... fun stuff that people would own. I've been saying for YEARS we need a class between AS and Super Stock. YAY YAY YAY YAY!

Steve,

I'm for this move (sent an e-mail to the SEB last night). This new CS class should work well with cars like the Solstice/MX-5/RX-8 and possibly 350Z. The 370Z stands out as does 4 door BS sedans like the E30/E36 M3. BS has had good numbers at Nats these last few years (4th best subscribed stock class in '08 iirc) but CS has been struggling these last few years. So I guess the SAC is banking on a bigger and more diverse class with this re-org.

I mentioned on sccaforums that I felt the SAC should look at re-classing the E36 M3 to DS. DS is the lsd compact sports sedan/coupe class and a 3,000lbs 240hp sedan with an lsd doesn't scream class killer to me - especially with cars like the '09 WRX and 135i.

My $0.02...

-Chike

Of the cars listed, the only car that I can see a lot of people campaigning is the C5... and I'm not sure there is a reason (other than the cost of entry) to not choose the Z06. Scanning corvetteforums, a FRC is a lot harder to find than a Z06 and not much cheaper.

I say leave the FRC in there - there's no real need to exclude a car which easily meets stock class production requirements. The later C5's got a slight 5hp bump in power which the FRC's will not have. It'll come down to the driver...

P.S. Got my log book # from Harmer.

There are plenty of 911's, Boxsters and Caymans that don't come play with SCCA because there's no place to play (I only run mine at PCA events). But, they're typical Porsche owners there, not a lot of hard core competitors. Also a decent number of M3 owners in the same bucket. I think more will come out if they had a competitive place to play, and they're super cool cars, so I'd see some of the current SCCA crowd migrating to them. And yes, to the C5.

I just can't see this being a popular class nationally. The more I look into C5's and the C5 market, the less reason I see to not get the Z06. I think the same goes for the other cars. If this class interests you, why not run SS?
