02 wrx 97xxx miles. 20g, ewg, meth, fmic, 750cc inj ect. iv had a rough idle before and cleaning the IAC seemed to fix that. so yet again about a week ago i cleaned it again cuz my idle was gettin bad again, and it was dirty. in the last few days i started noticing a studder at low rpm getting up to speed, which has steadily gotten worse and today the car is blinking the cel and breaking up... no idea whats bad. i cleaned the maf, and IAC and no different. dunno coil, plugs, timing belt.. any ideas?

well, it backfires alitle and shutters then gets through...then has no loss in power at all, idles fine. no sighnes of a blown motor such as smoke or power loss. it begun happening after my last gas fillup as well, possibly a fuel related problem. but i guuess thats something to check

The CEL is blinking? Is that from your EM? What codes do you have?

Check compression, take a look at your plugs while you're in there. If they have never been changed you should change them anyways. It's very unlikely ALL of your coil packs went bad at once. In my experience misfire on all cylinders can be caused by running too rich or too lean as well.

Fuel filter needs to be changed every 30k miles I believe.
And like everyone has suggested, check your compression, and while you're at it change your spark plugs as well if you haven't done that recently. Consistent misfire could also mean that your coils are bad, but having all 4 go at the same time seems a long shot. |

changed the fuel filter and no different. now its only misfiring on the 2nd and 4th cylinders. aka p302 pd, p304 pd. so they missfire over and over again. breaking up and alot of shaking when i test drove it. backfiring when coming into boost. havent got around to a comp test the weather here is killin me. iv come up with maybe its a bad injector(s), spark plugs, coils..i guess ill start goin down the line. anyone else had problems like this? where to start?

Sounds stupid but try reseting the ECU. I had a situation once where I changed plugs and it ran like crap afterwards because the fuel trims had compensated for the bad plugs. Reset the ECU and it ran pefect.

I would check the coils first. Since you're getting misfires now on one side of the engine just switch the coils with the otherside and see if you start misfiring 1 and 3 now; if you do then you need 2 new coils.

i had same problem not long ago. try changing the spark plugs. if that doesnt help than you will have to replace your coil on plugs.

do plugs first new coils are about 400 bucks. thats where i made my mistake and bought new coils instead of checking plugs. i replaced my coils and it turned out to be the plugs being the problem. so i have a perfect set of used coils sitting in my closet

Matt, I have a similar setup on an 02 with 105k miles. Every now and then i get misfire codes from all 4 at once too. However, mine is caused by the "just a little too light" flywheel i put put on there (i don't recall the weight, but Dave at Rallispec said it's borderline and "may" cause misfire codes - and it does), which throws the crank and cam sensors out of phase just enough to throw the codes. I'm sure my driving habits contribute to that too though =]
You don't by chance have a lightened flywheel, do you? I would also check the 'obvious' stuff.. oil covered MAF sensor (did this once to myself by not letting the K&N oil soak in long enough on the filter. Got around the block and it sputtered to a halt). It can be cleaned with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol. I've also had my MAP sensor o-ring 'spit' and cause weird problems... It really could be anything. Front O2 sensors can get 'flaky' and cause the engine to be over fueled, yet never throw a O2 sensor code. My front one failed at around 85k. When that happened, it ran like an old chevy with the choke flap jammed shut... black smoke, shuttering, sputtering, backfiring. Damn thing didn't give any warning either. |

yea iv got a 9.5 lb prolight findazia flywheel ha. but i cleansed the maf n whatnot, yet the diagnostic i got says iv got a bad TGV asssemmbly? wtf. which is a 600 dollar part and damn i really doubt if that solves any problems. its not throwing that code at all. they said an injector is overloading a cylinder becasue of this, that the tgv interfered with the pulse of the injector. i think hes full of it because this makes no sense to me. What do yal think?
