Once you do the initial turnin you can keep the wheel pretty straight while it is doing donuts.

Sounds more like CV joints. Are your boots cracked?

+1 on the CVs. get under the car (or just crank the steering wheel all the way to one side), grab a flashlight and look at the outside boots.

bad outer ones let the grease out and make the joints go clickity-clackity-clunkity...

Default p/s pump cost

how much does it cost to replace the p/s pump. my pumps acting funny and i may have to replace it if i cant find a simple fix. when i turn hard after driving strait for awhile it goes about a 1/4 turn then feels like i have no p/s. turn it again though and it acts normal. it might be the snow building up in my wheel wells or my pump is sucking up air. either way i wanted to get a rough idea of what i have to spend if i dont feel like doing it myself.

I think I hurt mine doing donuts recently. Doesnt sound weird, but I have no ps at idle. Small amount leaked out onto block, but not much.

I may be able to relate to that in more than one way if I'm interpreting your name correctly, my S10 Blazer does that now, the general consensus is CV's. sounds terrifying while I'm pulling axis spins in the snow, but I'm replacing the entire drivetrain soon enough anyway so I'm not too worried. That being said, if you care about the car, I'd look into having the joints checked out

good thread here..

i got a 06 2.5i and got a underdriven vishnu pulley on, does it cause the steering to not be so smooth.

Like when I turn into a parking space, it would turn then lose power then get power then lose and again and again then all fine.

Any ideas?

Were you doing donuts where you held the wheel at full lock for several seconds?

okay ... first off, I'd like to state that I've never done donuts, but does this mean your car shouldn't make that noise if the power steering pump is doing okay?

My car's made that noise for a while now, in that very rare, very brief split second where I happen to oversteer during a parking maneuver... y'know, right before your hands instinctively jolt the wheel back to a 'safe' position, as though they just got hit with electricity?

Sometimes when it's excessively cold (around 32F or below) and you just turn the car on, you'll hear that noise during slow maneuvers that are only about 50% to 70% of maximum steering...

or is this just to be expected of p/s pumps?
