Default 08 or 09 wrx??

So i know that those who read this post are going to say "DUH THE 09!"...which of course i would rather have the 09..but the reason why im not too sure about the two is the cost. Im being offered 2008 wrx's for 19000 brand new...whereas 2009's are going for 4-5k more. The question is, if i can get my hands on a brand new 2008 wrx, are they really that much worse than the 09s? aside from the tires and extra 40 some odd HP, what are the major differences?

I just traded my 2007 for an 2008 and I am very satisfied with the 2008. The 2009 has more initial HP and yes it does have a stiffer suspension but the potential is as far as I know the same. If your ultimate goal is to have a nice looking WRX with about 265 HP I would opt for the 2008 because much more than that will destroy either engine.

There are some questions that you have to ask yourself:
1.) What are your goals for the WRX? (Full race, a spunky daily driver, etc.)
2.) Will either car serve the intended purpose? (Full race, a spunky daily driver, etc.)
3.) How much will I have to put into the car to meet my goals?
4.) How much does each car cost?

I went through this thought process just a few days ago when I bought the 2008. I concluded that I would love to have an STi for the performance but I could not afford one. I then considered the 2008 vs the 2009 and concluded that I would not be modifying either car until the warranty was up. At that point I may want to add aftermarket parts such as a cat back exhaust and maybe an ECU reflash. I also considered that if I want to compete in any kind of racing, I am already out classed and can't afford to put thousands into my car.

I will be happy with a nice looking 08 WRX with mild mods after 36,000 miles.

Good luck.

Hi guys... making my meback to Nasioc forums after a LONG time!

I agree with Stealth WRX. I just relocated due to work... but the rental car was a piece of crap.. and decided to get a new car... I initially went for the 09 STI... but noticed it has no special interest rate from Subaru, and payment would be a little higher than planned.

I will be purchasing a house within the next 6 - 10 months, so it made a lot more sense to get the 08 WRX for less... then when I get the house, I can trade-in the WRX for the STI. Besides... I don't plan on modifying the WRX at all! - Saving it for the STI

Hey.. just for the price...even stock.. it is a fun car to drive every day to work and back home.

The way i see it with the 08-09's is. If your going to modify it, buy an 08, with the money you save on buying that instead of an 09 you can use to put into it making it even with or better then the 09's. But if your looking for a more aggressive daily driver that you dont want to mod, go with the 09's for the stiffer suspension and boosted HP. Just my .02

Go with the 09. Upped boost, upped horsepower, more aggressive and stiffer suspension, and the 09 comes with a moonroof I just almost traded my 2.5i on a 09 wrx. It was the WR blue color with the gunmetal wheels and when i test drove it man u could just feel the difference...... i never wanted to test drive a 08 again. BIG difference.

I've posted this before in another thread, and I will post this in any thread where someone is thinking about buying an 09.

Before you even consider an 09 you may want to read the following two posts below. Certain 09s are experiencing catastrophic engine failure (rod bearing failure) due to a reason Subaru will not share with us. I would NOT buy an 09 if you plan on modding or at least wait until the 09 motor failure has been "resolved."

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1648372

List of every 09 motor failure posted on NASIOC (Check back often, it grows every day, and I could be added any day): http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1695936

had an 08 for a year, now the 09 for a few months, much happier with the 09 all around. Just try and get a build date of 10/08 or later and you should be fine. Mine is 09/08 and no problems, most of failures have been 07/08 and 08/08.

well the 08 wrx isnt considered a real "wrx" in most peoples opinion. the 09 feels more like a performance and rally car. if your not looking for that go with the 08

Owned 08 and now own 09. You are getting what you pay for if you go with the 09. It wins with looks, handling, and power. Do whatever you can to round up the extra cash if you can.

it all depends what specs came with the 08 and 09s. here in canada, the 08 WRXs imo are more worth buying than the 09 wrxs. the wrx 265 excluded. i checked the prices for both, the 08 brand new is 37k, while the 09 brand new is around 38. here, the 08 has basically everything but the moonroof., with the 09, you lose 6 disc cd changer, sat radio, steering wheel controls. mainly jus the small stuff. performance is the same with both, unless you go with the 265. if you like the interior of the 09, but like the features of the 08, do what i did. buy whatever was different in the 09 then install it yourself in the 08. cuz the 08 vs 09 interior is exactly the same except for the shift bezel, and a red hazard button. but like i said, if you want performance, go 265, otherwise go regular 08 wrx. but thats all based on what i know from canadian cars
