Default EVO and STI now classed in Speed World Challenge Touring Category

Quote:
SPEED World Challenge Reclassifies Evo and STi
TOPEKA, Kan. (Jan. 29, 2009) - SCCA Pro Racing has announced that the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII and IX, and Subaru Impreza STi will be moved from the SPEED World Challenge GT category to SPEED Touring Car in 2009.

Following a wave of changes to the SPEED Touring Car rules over the winter, the SCCA Pro Racing technical department has determined that the Evo and STi would be better suited to the Touring Car class.

"In reviewing the specifications, it makes much more sense for the Mitsubishi and Subaru to be in the Touring Car class than GT,” SCCA Pro Racing President and CEO Robert Wildberger said. “Our technical staff researched each model and determined the Evo and STi would fit in the Touring Car rules with minimal modifications, making for an economical build as opposed to a very radical build for GT. The move will allow teams fielding these cars to be much more competitive and will enhance the SPEED Touring Car races, which are already one of the best shows in motorsports.”

More information on the reclassifications will be posted shortly in the competitor information section.
So Marshall....how much of the ESX car is prepped beyond the usual Touring regs? I.e., can it be dumbed down to touring specs, or would a clean sheet need to be started?

Until the spec sheets come out, I can only imagine they will be heavy for Touring Cars, but make fairly tame power levels so teams wouldn't be fighting reliability in the powertrain. Like a T2 car with suspension...but on skinny Toyos.

i remember when the RX8 came out..people thought it would be a very cheap TC build..seemed to be the right place for it...but then it would have got classed in GT or something?

This is a good move, the Evo and STI seemed out of place amongst the purpose built racers in Speed GT. Hopefully we'll see more of both in Speed TC given that it shouldn't take that much to make either competitive in this class. I predict the Realtime Acuras having a tougher time in the up coming seasons.

You do realize that Turner has entered a grand total of 3 World Challenge races since we last won at Sebring in 2006, right?

St Petersburg 2006 and the TC double at Lime Rock last year are the only races we've entered since then, and we haven't run a full season in WC since 2004.

Thanks for thinking of us as the BMW team to beat in WC, though, and watch us in the Koni Challenge race from Daytona this Saturday at 4:00 PM ET on SPEED!

All i can say is look out for the tears to start flowing from the other teams to the SCCA.. they are really going to gripe how 'outmatched' they are against these two and probably ask they make driveline changes or get kicked back up the ladder.

Clean sheet. Built too heavy for TC (tubing sizes, fuel cell, brakes, etc). I love the move -- the smartest thing they've done in a while, but yeah, unlike the Acuras and Mazdas that need a lot of concessions to make speed and power, I expect the STi and Evo to be kept fairly stock, few engine mods, and the base weights to stay somewhat high.

Until the rules hit the paper, we can all speculate. I went to the event last year at limerock... the bmws and realtimes are very fast and competitive. However, I dont think they are nearly as fast as the STI and evo. But I think they will be heavy weight concerns of trying to make the sti and evo maintain close to factory weight, and that might it a pig in the tighter turns.

I doubt we will see either in World Challenge any time soon. Even if we do, It won't be competitive for a few seasons. Cool idea though, hopefully Touring gets more cars soon!

TC Klein is coming back with a factory BMW team, that should bring at least two cars if they can find drivers.

A factory team without drivers usually means it isn't a factory team.

Yea, if you need "funded drivers" then you ain't exactly "factory"

These cars are going to weigh a metric ****-ton to get them on par with the other cars. 3300+lbs on 235s, yea, you have fun with that

I hope they're not too porky. Hopefully they'll spec a restrictor to keep power down, possibly even under stock power levels, and let a little more weight come off.

Supposedly it's "factory"? The news was all over the BMW boards. Perhaps they are going to have two cars, one with factory drivers and one with paying.

Good point. We know to trust whatever we read on forums and on the intarweb.

BMW already has a running affiliation with a team in TC.

yup! and they do really well... when they dont smash all three cars up in one race

Still, amazing drivers for sure.

As for the ESX car, odds of EVER seeing that unicorn again... I'd say somewhere between, never and then sun will explode before then

Well since your "in the know" why don't you debunk the rumor? If not, I will believe the team member on the BMW site.
