Default How to deter car thieves?

Hey guys;

So since the 17th of January in my building there have been 6 car windows smashed, at least that many bikes stolen from bike room, including stealing the entire rack and bikes attached and storage lockers broken into. There may be more that Im not aware of.

Most of the cars were down near mine on P4, then this morning I find the VW accross from me had his window smahed. I am sure he had no valuables because we had spoken about it before.

So wondering what you guys in condos do?
  • Leave doors open?
  • Windows down?
  • Sign saying "no valuables inside"?
  • Remove coin holder, show it being empty?
  • Glove box open maybe?
Or do doing these things just provoke the thieves and they smash your window anyway?

We have already removed all the snowboarding gear from storage locker, they can steal xmas decorations and the vaccuum if they want. My bike seat, post and tools have been stolen, but kryptonite locks on everything else, looking into welding down the bike rack mine's attached to.

Strata in my building is pretty good, but until our agm next month when the budget is approved, no new security measures.

Looking for suggestion on keeping the subie safe?

btw my car is pretty much stock so far, is the factory "alarm/immobilizer" enough to keep the car from being stolen and driven away?

Thanks in advance

Wow...where is your building?

There's been some in my building, but nothing to compare to your's!

As for keeping it safe, you might want to try a club just for fun since it'd probably add to the time a thief needs to steal your car. Of course if they're just breaking in to steal small stuff then the best thing to can do you're already which is leaving the car empty of all valuables.

I'd roll down your windows and absolutly clean it out so they can't take anything!

If they are going to steel your car there going to steel your car regardless.

Other than that, I'd do a stake out with my baseball bat and catch them red handed and beat the living **** out of them!

Secure parking? or open down to P4, if it's secure some douche is not paying attention. As for showing you have nothing and leaving the windows down, your asking for it as well.

Just keep the car empty of anything, sounds like they are more out for quick cash then a car.

+1 for that. The cops and the legal system is failing society in general.

I have a friend that had the same issue but with more break ins. Everyone, and that means every single car, started leaving the cars unlocked, windowns open or otherwise obviously accessible and empty cars. The thieves moved on and there have been no further breaki-ins.

I'd leave the glovebox open, to show that it's empty (either don't leave your insurance documents in there or leave a photocopy), but then again, some of these guys just do it to damage the cars and not actually to steal anything...

you have to go through 2 gates to get down to parking. I think from now on I will leave glovebox open, it will be completely empty and may remove coin tray and leave it on the seat. needless to say the car is completely empty except for an air freshener

thanks for the ideas guys, and yeah friday night I might take the louisville for a look around

obviously sleepin inside your car is not an option, I suspect some kids did that and they also live in the same building...you know...2 security gates are not easy to get passed...sometime they are highed after drugs and ****...

I would say
-Sign saying "no valuables inside"
-Remove coin holder, show it being empty
-Glove box open
-But lock the door and windows...

Someone should report to building manager or cops... they should have the security camera underground nowadays...

Could this be an inside job?

Tape a laser pointer that can aim at your car. Put it on a motorized motor to have it moving in random positions. ... wait, will this work?

I had an old physics prof that had rigged up a few disposable cameras to take pictures around his car whenever his alarm was set off...

Get a good two way pager alarm for the car... also is there signs of break and enter into the under ground or storage lockers? If not, then it's people in the building just driving away rather then waiting till the gate is all the way down.

Check all walk though doors in the under ground and storage area, any signs of damage or pry marks, or anything stuck into the hole to prevent the latch from locking.

I used to be on a strata for a year or two... And we were having issue's like these once or twice it turn out to be just some strret kids.... Then we found out it was a guy that lived there that was a physico

Usually these smash and grabs thieves won't bother with cars that have alarms. They like to clean out several cars in one go and like to do it in silence.

Make sure you have a a few visible LEDs flashing and maybe a Compustar-type alarm sticker on your window.

I would also keep the car completely empty and put a sign on the dash that says, no valuables here, not even a penny is left in this car overnight.

Thieves will move on to another easier score.

It's either druggies or stupid kids doing it, and they should be strung up by their nuts if caught. Nothing infuriates me like cowardly thieves messing with someone else's stuff.

you might get boot****ed if you try that, hide a camera that is motion activated in your area to see what is going on by who. then you know what your up against.

and when your ready, burrow your buddy's 12 ga. and put a slug in his ass(literally). after that you take a small sledge hammer to his hands and feet, and break his arms. be sure to smash his hands to mush, that way he will never be able to break in, or smash another ride, and we all wont have to pay more insurance!

don't leave it to our local police.

Turns out it was 6 cars again last night. I will do all the above except maybe the sign. I have talked to strata this morning and will follow up when I get home.

Ive suggested video cameras, but to get one installed, wired, the recorder and the whole deal is 10,000$, and unless you have him on tape breaking into your car, and can clearly see his face, its not point. Video of someone walking through the parkade with a pocket full of change and your shades wont do any good in court from what I'm told.

Thanks for the responses guys

get one of these:

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...21&catid=25754

put it in a place where you can see where the thief is getting in. If he is sneaking in with a car pulling in you can tell who doesn't pay attention or if he is getting in from inside the building you will be able take action.

also make sure the camera is out of sight and out of reach so he doesn't steal that too...

If he lives in an apartment complex, there may be some issues with that idea. You have to check with your apartment manager and see if they would authorize the use of personal security systems for your lot.

My car was broken into a couple of years ago... inside the gated underground parkade. Fortunately, the thief just pulled back the window to put a rod down and undo the locks. I think he was trying to make off with the car because he left fingerprints on the window and then pulled off the fuse box cover... and discovered my Ravelco right next to it.
Ravelco won't prevent a breakin, but nobody can drive your car away.

A little OT but related hypothesis here. I wonder because of the near zero value of scrap metal, thieves and people in need of "quick cash" (a.k.a drug users wanting their next fix) have gone back into breaking into vehicles to find "valuables"?

LaterZ!
