Default First turbo car, normal sounds?

Hey thanks for the help,

I just picked up a 2006 Legacy GT Friday and I have never owned a turbo car before. There are a lot of new sounds in this car coming from a 2.5i Impreza. There is a whining noise while accelerating which I think is just the turbo but I cannot tell. I heard this on a couple of legacy gt vids on youtube (ones where you can hear the engine well) and one said that it is normal for the whine. Being that the car is used I want to check with more experienced drivers on here as what is normal sounds for 2.5gt/wrx?

There are no knocks or pings or squeels, seems pretty smooth except sometimes there is some fluttering in the powerband while accelerating. But if I let off the gas then hit it again the smoothness comes back. This doesn't happen much but I figured someone here could help me get used to noises and what to expect form the car.

is it a whine or more of a whistle?
generally, turbos make more of a whistle noise while spooling
and superchargers make a whine

The turbo noise is normal whistling whine whatever, depends on how you describe it. There is a whistle with the OE accordion tube and a wind rush noise as well.

As far as the power flutter, this feeling is usually achieved when the car reaches target boost, the power feels like it stops pulling but this is normal. When you release the pedal, boost pressure drops, and when you get on it again, as boost increases again, you can feel the power rush up once again till it hits target boost.

Quite possibly a transmission whine. Shouldn't be anything to worry about, if it's a manual.

Turbo noise is good. Well...as long as it's a good noise.

whine/whistle/woosh are all normal most of the time if you're building boost with no problems and if it idles fine.

Haha, I did the samething when I bought my first WRX. Every 5 minutes I thought something was messed up or broken. It's probably just paranoia, nothing to worry about.

Yea it's the tranny. Clutch seems good and doesn't grind or clink. Gears don't seem to be damaged. I did hear the same noise from the '08 2.5i I traded in but didn't seem quite as loud.

In that video it sounds more like the transmission. Experiment with that, does it do it when you engine brake from a high RPM?

Also do you have a boost gauge? If the whine is in relationship with the boost its the turbo...

Regardless I think its most likely normal.
