At the Track Revived TransAm Series

I have seen that SCCA is reviving the Trans Am series, on a limited basis and it will be based on the GT 1 spec cars, not unlike it was before it went away.
But I was watching the Grand Am series this weekend and saw quite a few Mustangs in the GS class (I think) and there was one Challenger in the mix too. It got me to thinking about the glory days of Trans Am--what do you guys and gals think of a regeneration of the pony car days of the late '60's? I think it would be cool to see the Challenger, Mustang and soon-to-be Camaro on track again battling head to head!
With the economic environment and the condition of the Detroit three, I know it is a pipe dream, but I like to dream and thought it would be cool as a sub class in Grand Am or in World Challenge. Something so the cars would be fairly close to how they come off the showroon floor--like the cars in Grand Am are--with a weight reward/penalty system and/or inlet restrictors to achieve parity, the way World Challenge manages it.
What do you think? Waste of time or intersting...

Looks interesting, but under-advertised and horribly scheduled if they want to turn it into a spectator event. Something like this needs to be with a feature event like Grand-Am, ALMS, etc... but instead the dates are with SCCA regionals, which I can't imagine have a huge spectator draw.

And cars in Grand-Am are far from "off the showroom floor" with the crazy Prep 1 and Prep 2 rules. Koni Challenge are close to stock, but the GT series in Grand-Am really isn't.

Interesting, but I think you're right about the pipe dream

The Camaro is legal for Koni Challenge GS, and I believe there is at least one team that is going to try and run it this season. The test car that was at SEMA was on display at Daytona, though not racing.

I heard that they were going to revive the rivalry of the Camaros, Mustangs and Challengers, but get this... It was going to be on tube frames on the same venues as NASCAR trucks. Yup, great road racing legends being reduced to turn left...

its almost sickening.

I ask -- why another series?

IMHO, SCCA WC series numbers, or at least varied participants is REALLY dwindling. There is NO need to "revive" something that is already covered. It is hard enough to find good road racing on TV, let alone have more teams deciding which series they are going to throw their money into.

At this point, less is more. Koni Challenge --> Rolex seems to do well, for me, for covering Production to Prototypes.... and Speed WC + ALMS seem to be falling off.

Just have the "TransAm" cars race GS in Koni.

I didn't say to start another series, My thought was that the Munstang, Challenger,Camaro could run in conjunction with another existing series.
I guess what I was suggesting--that the pony cars could be a sub catagory in, say the Koni Challenge, or World Challenge.

I did not hear about the Camaro in the Koni Challenge. There you have it, the MUstangs are there already, and there is at least one Challenger. Sounds intersting.

And I understand that these are in no way 'off the showroom floor'. There is a lot of prep in any race car. I consider the GS cars to be recognizable and relatable to what a person can buy off the showroom floor--that is how I should have stated it

Well, as far as a feeder series, The Mustang Challenge feeds into GS Koni with identical prep cars. SCCA already has American Sedan.

As far as almost completely stock, you have the Touring categories under SCCA.

With the decline in motorsport series in general that aren't NASCAR, it seems unlikely that splitting efforts more would be a good idea. However, if you can get all the "good ol boys" behind it... who knows.

Maybe Speed will make a specti.. I mean series out of it. I don't think anyone watching that would be too interested in racing, however (good "tv").

Oh... I thought this thread was about the actual revival of the Trans-Am series.

If they required the actual bodies, motors, transmissions and suspension of the cars represented, I’d be interested. If they go with spec parts and you can only tell the cars apart by the stickers, I'm not interested.

Oh, if that is an official press release, then I apologize for the tangents. Regardless, my opinions on the matter still stand.

Sorry OP.

$$$$$$

They have a big money sponsor that stepped up.

They can pull from cars that are already prepped at SCCA rules so the pool of drivers is much larger than most other series.

They are running on already established large SCCA weekends so it might help bring more exposure to club racing at the same time.

Not the best time to re-start in one sense but the fields will have cars for sure.

I don't even know what the thread was about. I thought it was actually about the Trans-Am series the SCCA is reviving... but the more I read it, the more I thought Dave was just dreaming about the possibilities of creating an SCCA series and didn't know it's actually coming back.

I'm confused too

We need to clone the Aussie V8 Supercar Series on this side of the pond. It would be popular and fun to watch.
