Default Avoid Tuning by Paul @ DBTuned in the Sacramento Area

Do not go to DBTuned unless for service, bolt-ons, or mechanical issues, but don’t let him tune your car. My car (Original Owner) is an 06 STi with about 41k miles currently on it. Paul has been the one and only person to touch my car. He did the entire install and tuning that was done (Mods listened below). Also it took Paul a month to finish the install. I started to notice some issues with my performance, boost levels, and my Aquamist kit. My boost was at .11mpa which is 16PSI, Car felt like my stock STi, and my Aquamist kit DDS3 was showing 8 bars when it should be 5-6 bars.

I decided to take my car to a very-well known tuner last Saturday who asked to be anonymous to avoid confrontation. We will refer to him as Tuner X. First thing Tuner X did was perform a compression test to make sure everything is ok. Keep in mind Paul is the only person to ever touch my car. Compression test came up as follows:

Cylinder 1 - 130
Cylinder 2 - 136
Cylinder 3 - 125
Cylinder 4 - 136

That’s 9% off tolerance, below the tolerance call for 7% by specifications. Then they start to check the cam gear to see if it slipped a tooth since one bank (Cylinder 1 & 3) was off. Cam checked out perfect. Then they ran another pressure test on the valves to determine if it was a ring or a valve issue (can’t remember what it was called). It turns out it was the intake valve in cylinder 3. We checked the spark plugs and found signs of bad detonation. Tuner X advised me about the issue and told me it will have to be pulled out and need repair. Also keep in mind I was out in the garage working with them so I wasn’t going off what was on paper and I helped them perform the tests. I know you can argue about the methanol mixture but I’m very detailed and anal about my water/methanol mixture, I’ve been very consistent.

My call was to ignore fixing the damage for now since it really isn’t severe but not good at all. Tuner X hooked up his laptop and cables to see how Paul’s tune ran out on the street. Tuner X could only do one pull before he had to bring it back in for extreme detonation and knocking. He showed me the log files and pointed out each line of data that showed detonation. When I originally left Paul’s place with my tune my graph showed 285hp - 318tq @ 19PSI. This is really low for my setup on a mustang dyno. Paul’s answers for the low numbers were “Some cars just don’t make boost”. Tuner X showed me the actual power graph of Paul’s tune which showed 281tq – 262hp and took until 4000rpm for full spool, that’s above and beyond horrible

At this point I told Tuner X to double check the car for any other issues since I lost trust in Paul. Paul has outstanding mechanical skills since Tuner X was impressed with his install and found no other issues.

Tuner X removed my Stock Boost Control Solenoid and placed in an NBC Manual Boost Controller. We did as many pulls as we can perform before I started to run out of water/methanol. We did several 2nd gear pulls, 3rd gear pulls, and 1-4th gear pulls. My car now puts down 348tq – 281hp @ 21.5PSI and is quieter, more responsive, and power you can definitely feel. I could have gotten more power but we forgot to change out the Aquamist jet since Paul put in the smallest jet. Like before he showed me the log files of his tune and my car was running as health as you can get (besides the damaged that was already done by Paul). No knocking or detonation.

I know Paul has a large following and people may attack me for posting this but I know what I felt, saw and know. I am not here to knock Paul as a person or a mechanic but as a tuner. Paul has great mechanical Skills and a very nice guy to talk with, just he can’t tune. Trust me when I suggest you look for another tuner.

If you TRULY wanted to keep "tuner X" out of it you should have kept all of that road tune info out of your detail and just said tuner x found this and did this.

A lot of people run stock boost solenoids and Paul has always been open about his use of stock ones. I don't see why you'd expect someone to use something different unless you told them what part to put in and paid for it????

Why did you go posting this on two different forums instead of handling the situation one on one first?

Looks like this has been pretty thoroughly debunked on I-Club...

Hmmmm.....My Unicorn has a Built motor and transmission from DBtuned, as well as (what some would say) a 'push it to the limits' tune (from DBtuned) , and yet.... I have no issues. I drove this car to SubieFest as my break in. Many will attest to this, I still have ZERO oil burn, and ZERO issues. Hell... Paul@Dbtuned took an entire week off of working on other customer's cars to get mine ready for SubieFest and stayed at the shop until O dark thirty to get me on my way down there. Find that kind of service from 'Tuner X'...please...

I find it funny that the OP is causing this whole dramafest, most likely after "tuner X" told him to.

Spike_916... Dude, you beat the living hell out of your car without any sort of knock view or array of gauges? Sounds like you might have a problem with dealing with extra power. You've got to pay to play. The mods on your car are a joke to many of the other cars that visit / have been tuned by DB let alone this forum.

Your 'Tuner X' has told many of us in person that our cars were going to explode or 'ping themselves to death'. You go ahead and enjoy your precious 'Tuner X' and his 'Road Dyno', while...most of us in the SRiC/BAIC will enjoy the benefits of shops like DBtuned, GST, FLI, and LIC.

why might that be?

I've got an amazing tune from dbtuned. As well as an amazing built block from dbtuned. Not to mention the service that was spent the whole day & night before subiefest working on my car.

+10 for db right there. That's true dedication & pride to the work that is done. I even got phone calls the drive down/while there/and the drive back just to check up on everything and make sure that nothing bad happened or anything.

Just research everything, talk to people that use the certain shop that you decide to go with. It's an investment, you have to make sure where you go will treat you right, back up their work, and at the end of the day...if there is an issue...figure out how they decide to deal with it. Hash everything out with them ahead of time, talk about the risks, talk about the potential problems that might arise.

Plain and simple...do your homework.

LIC is the only place...

They also offer a tuning service now.

Local tuner blew my motor on their tunes. Funny my rebuilt motor blew a head gasket, passenger side bank and the leak down on the driver side was less then ideal for a new motor.

But I'm going to be doing Cosworth soon enough.

I'd be very cautious around tuner X too... As he seems to be in a motor selling spree... Soon as he found out my car had a 7% leakdown problem on one cylinder he refused to tune it. Unless I paid him to fix it. And he was pointing at a bad motor without even looking at it. Basing his quest on another shops info. I got the feeling he seems to sell people stuff that is not needed but to suit his needs. Real world doesnt have perfect motors to tune everyday. But I like how he will take 2% run with it and make it out to be 90%. His sales are based on what if's, fear and building misguided trust.

He said I needed a new motor. Funny I called LIC, They hooked me up with a company down south that had no problems tuning my car. Car runs perfect to this day.

I also saw Madd's car down at subiefest.. Great looking work and seem to be running quite well.

Also... Since I know Tuner X is reading these posts..... Every shop has a bad day. I would not be telling people to post up **** like this to try and build up your company. When things backfire it will get ugly and you'll end up with everyone laughing at you and you will move or close your doors...

I would have gone and spoke with paul before talking trash. Hell how many times did I give GST to correct their mistakes before I started a thread on them? 8-9 times???
