Can anyone out there help me out with a timing belt job and cam seal replacement? I'm not really too keen on ponying up $825 for Don Miller Subaru in Madison to do it, although it seems that the parts are almost 50% of the cost. If anyone wants some extra cash and has the know-how... Well... Yeah. Or, if anyone knows of an independent shop that does good work on Subarus...

I just did my timing belt (& water pump) on my 04 WRX. its easy. did it after work, took me about 2 hours.

you can get the full Timing belt kit (including water pump) for about $300.

It looks pretty daunting... I guess a good part of the total cost is parts, which I've confirmed by pricing it all out on my own. Since I've never done one I'm worried that if I get it all pulled apart I'm going to end up messing the timing up and bending valves... And I'm not even sure how to replace the cam seals. I haven't cracked the FSM yet... Honestly I don't see a need to replace the timing belt and everything, but if it's already apart, might as well do it all now @ 76,000 miles instead of waiting a year or two for the 105,000 mile service... Wanna make $100 for two hours of work

your only at 76k miles? i just did mine at 135k. when i took the belt off it looked like it could probably go another 100k.

I dont want to tell ya what to do, but if it were me i wouldnt bother for another 20k miles at least.

if you want to still replace it, maybe some night after work we can replace it.

Don't think I need to really replace the belt / tensioner / water pump at this point... Seeing as I'm only at 76k. My guess is the timing belt has to come off to replace the cam seals, that's why I figured I might as well do it all at once, but if everything is still in good shape I can see it just being a waste. At this point I'm babying the car monitoring the potential oil leak from the cam seal to see how bad it is, or if that's really where it's leaking. Put 200 miles on since my last oil change and doesn't look like I've lost any oil yet.

That's what it looks like upon brief inspection. I'm going to take a better look at everything this weekend. I've been too busy with school and work, had about 20 minutes to change my oil on Sunday and noticed that something might be amiss.

I'm going to try replacing the PCV first, see if that fixes the issue. I've seen that if the PCV is bad it could cause oil to leak from the cam seals... Couldn't hurt, anyway.

the CW thread has been dead for too long, lets bring this back.

Picked up this WRX about a month ago. Its getting the STX treatment. hopefully she should be competative at the Milwaukee/Chicago level by the end of the year.

I saw a WRB STI with goldies driving down Post Road in Plover last night. I didn't see the front to check the year. But it was prob an 04-07 rear end style. Who's car is that?

Been a long time since I've looked at this page. The Subaru has been on the back burner for a long time. Stizmm if you decide to part with the STI splitters on that wrx let me know.

Who's got the Silver POS with the aftermarket black hood? I saw you driving on Hoover around 3pm last night. BTW, your wing is also for a Civic or Cavalier. You should be ashamed of your WRX.

The WRX is gone. I will be out of the subaru club for awhile but plan to buy an STi or Forrester XT in the future once my housing situation is settled. Everything is still up in the air as far as if we plan to continue to live in the cold or not. We now have a lot of family in California so it may be time for us to move as well when the time is right. On a side note, the WRX stayed in central Wisconsin, now owned by a guy in Wausau.

Anyone in the area good with finding a vacuum leak? I know I have one, not sure where. I thought I fixed the problem, but I still have a leak. I've been dealing with this for the last few weeks now and I'm completely lost at this point, short of tearing the intake manifold off and replacing the gaskets I don't know what else it could even be...

let it idle and spray some carb/choke cleaner over all the vac connection points, the base of the manifold, and at the TB base. Listen for a change in idle. If it changes, you found the culprit.

Have you checked the turbo inlet for cracks? Whats the car doing?

anywho, I am bumping this thread. This place has been DEAD. Ben, I know the guy who bought your car, and it should be on the road soon. Also, our car is DONE and was out for a bit last night. The car is WAY too much fun!

You can use propane and wave it around the suspected leak area and listen for idle change.
