Default EJ20G severe coil failure

My friend has a 92 WRX, and he was over today working on it, we went to get food and on the drive back it suddenly started misfiring pretty badly. We got back to my place, and I check all the injectors, and they were all working, then I started unplugging coils. I got to coil #4, and there was no change when I unplugged it... so we pulled it out and found this

Ive never seen one fail like that before. Any thoughts?

from what ive heard and see, the plastic on the coil on plugs were very prone to cracking. they just get old... you can however use usdm wrx ones with a slight modification i believe. someone else can confirm what other coil-on-plug's are compatible

but that is the worst ive seen. usually its just cracks around the spark plug end

I had a set of ej20g coils on the shelf luckily, being the packrat I am. So he's back on the road now, but it looks like something inside the coil actually cooked, the plastic isn't just broken but it's pushed out by that white insulating (?) material.

And yes, I run 05 STI COPs on my ej20k heads, with the grounding mod.

Holy Cow! That must have gotten extra special super hot! I've never seen those break anywhere other than the tips.
