I left your build date off the list as you weren't 100% sure and your VIN production number is the highest of any hatchback we've had so far. Let me know what the build date is, for sure, when you get your car back.

However feel free to throw mine on the list as well:

Thanks for al lthe updates. My #2 motor has 9,300 miles on it as of today: so far so good.

And a reminder:

- Hold out for a new turbo in addition to the long block.
- Hold out for the Gold Plus warranty.
- SOA has offered to swap or take back some cars if they were new enough.

How new is new enough? Mine has 1460 miles and is 70 days old.

For the record...

Miles: 1517
VIN: 5018xx
Build. 07/08

Are we seriously going to remove someone for having a catback exhaust (or at least I am assuming by your statement that it wasn't a turbo back). Subaru offers non-factory exhausts as a freaking option (SPT)...

Why are you removing someone that specified a VIN, build date, and failure mileage? In other words why do we keep changing the criterion for making this list?

He didn't specify if it was a TBE or a cat back, just said it was "Perrin exhaust" for which Subaru was refusing to allow him to purchase an extended warranty for his car after the failure because of that mod.

This list is for no Engine or ECU related mods. SPT also makes intakes, so then you would have to allow all aftermarket intakes as well if you follow that logic. It easier just to keep the list clean with no mods. Perhaps if it were a car with SPT parts only that were installed by the dealer, then an exception could be made, otherwise no. It really doesn't matter if a handful of cars are removed from the list that reduces the total by 5, does it? It does matter if there are cars with mods on the list because then it can be entirely discounted by Subaru ("oh, that list on Nasioc? It has cars with aftermarket engine mods. Just a bunch of kids abusing their cars.")

posted in the engine failure poll thread...I guess he didn't see this one:

Anyway, even though they knew this motor should never have been let out on the road, they still want service records???!!!! I could have had the oil changed every 1000 Kms - the motor still would have failed. Being a reliability engineer and even teacher of maintenance best practices, it amazes me that manufacturers still require oil changes every 6000 km's and they don't even analyze randomly or otherwise for oil integrity. VIN/Chassis number 8H827306 manufactured after April 2008 and sold July 2008. I did a great deal of research on vehicle reliability, boxster engines (world engine last 2 of 3 years) before buying. To other bloggers, yes equipment can fail somewhat randomly but when you know there is a very high probabilty of failure and still allow this to happen is inexcusable.

here's one from 3gwrx, user name is Flipz

"I've been reading these forums since I bought my 09 WRX back in February. It's sad that my very first post is to report that we need to add one more car to the list of cars that have suffered the horrible SPUN BEARING!!! Yep thats right, I took my car into the dealership today because it needed its first oil change and because a couple days ago I started hearing a knocking noise coming from the engine when I would reach 2500 to 3000 rpm. It wasnt loud at all, but it was there. So when I dropped my car off for its oil change I asked one of the techs to take a ride and see if he could hear it too. Upon his arrival back at the dealership he confirmed my fears, spun bearing. Now my car is out of commission for atleast 2 weeks while they replace the engine.

Now before anyone says, "Did you break in the engine? Did you drive the car hard?", I never drove the car hard or did any crazy stuff with it. It's my pride and joy. I never drove over 4000 rpm during the break in period, and for that matter even after the break in period Ive only gone over 4000 rpm maybe once or twice. And when I did it was barely over 4000 rpm. This problem is not caused by driver abuse. It is caused by a mechanical defect that the driver has no control over.

09' Silver 5 door WRX
Build date: 08/08
Mileage: 3700
The dealership gave me a loaner until my car is ready and were very helpful."

See if you can get him to register on Nasioc and make a post (including the VIN).

Looking for some assistance. My vehicle was manufactured in 07/08 and I'm worried that I'm starting to show the signs of this issue. I posted a video on Youtube and would appreciate anyone chiming in.

Basically, it "knocks" at low rpms/idle, but I don't hear that louder knocks in higher rpms as I see in other people's videos.

Miles: 7,000
VIN: <will update later>
Build: 07/08

No, that sounds ok. You'll know when you have the problem - it is obvious even with the windows up as a knocking noise between about 2000-3000 RPM with some throttle that gets progressively worse as you drive it.

Thats what mine sounded like when it first started happening. Then it got progressivly worse. I drove it an additional 20 miles to try and get home. I still got stranded away from my home though...
