I think what he probably meant was that, if anyone has given their Auto-WRX a thorough work-out, it would be you. And so you would be the best person to comment on the strength of the Auto-trans.

I've only heard of one auto-trans failure and it was supposedly from a bad torque converter installation.

RiftsWRX, you are the only guy on this board that I know of, that has beat and beat on their auto. I didn't mean to imply anything bad out of it. But If anyone knew about the weakness of the Subaru's 4eat, I would say it would be you. Just trying to give a little respect to the Fastest Auto WRX around.

Fair enough.

So far, the only thing that even remotely sounds beat is the rear diff... which will happen when you beat on the car launching all the time.

Other then that (knock on wood) I'm fine. I'm due for a flush and change of my oils (around 15k miles) but I ask a LOT out of my trans. Also I'm really thinking of doing a valve body mod. Just gotta look into it some more, and recoup some expense first.

Why don't you also look at the Quaife Automatic-Torque-biasing differentials for the front and the rear of your WRX ? This should improve the handling of the car to a whole new dimension, I would suppose ?

Check out:

http://www.quaifeamerica.com/differentials/diffs.htm

and the application list is:

Hey Rifts, tell me more about the rear diff. I beat on it pretty hard last night because it takes me several seconds longer at altitude to reach 4100rpms for my launch.

After a half-dozen launches (1/8th mile track), I noticed a "sound" coming from the rear on the shift into 3rd - hard to describe, not anything drastic but new to me. What should I look for? My dealer knows me and is cool with my mods, should I have them look at it? I'll be changing all the fluids soon (full synthetic - 20k miles).

Oh, and I owned the f-bodies and mustangs last night in the 1/8th.

Very interesting, Hunter. If anyone knows any more about this, I'd like to hear it. They've actually got an application for the WRX. Only $995 (ouch).

Quaife ATB differentials are used in F1 race cars and also WRC race cars, with devastating effect. Those are extremely sturdy and come with a lifetime warranty (even when raced). I think that is the best mod that one can do to one's car, from a handling perspective, in addition to changing the stock tires to better ones. If you are into Auto-x, then it is almost a mandatory requirement and would complement the WRX's kick-ass center differential.

The new Ford Focus RS (Rally edition ??) would come standard from the factory with Quaife ATB differential in the front.

I thought those differentials were for the manual transmission only. Last I looked, at least, they did not have one for the 4EAT (front). Has that changed?

No harm in calling them up and asking. I believe they have an 800 number.

Hmmmm.... grab a tape recorder and record it if you can... could be a loose diff mount in the rear. I get deceleration gear whine on my car... but that's also from the dynopac when I went to turbo xs.. (we THRASHED the car trying to figure out how to dyno an auto)
