Default New car opinions? Sub 40k Poll

What do you guys think is the best car, sub 40k?

We are contemplating replacing our MK5 GTI, and of course the WRX265 is a serious contender.

The criteria we are after:
-2008 or newer
-AWD
-not a sedan

Other car being considered
-FJ Cruiser

sub 40k all said and done, or sub 40k on the sticker.

depends what you want it for

FJ is not equal to a WRX.

AWD and not a sedan limits you to WRX (Hatch? same as sedan basically)

or SUV's

Tora and myself like our FXT's, and they are sub 40k sticker.

Can't remember but someone here picked up an FJ and really likes it too.

265WRX seems like a sweet deal, but at 39,999 the STI with better brakes gearbox suspension and so on is a better deal IMO and is still sub 40k.

True yes, my criteria is quite limiting, and the reason is its going to be my wife's car... FJ indeed does not equal WRX.

I keep saying STI but since I own one, two would be a bit uneconomical. I would say 40k all said and done. Manual transmission IS an option

Thanks!

if its the Wifes car, I would say does she want something fun/practical or practical/fun.

My wife loves her new FXT, so I would push for one of those, WRX (old 224hp) drivetrain with ground clearance and plenty of space for family.

Drakar, Tough thing is her parents just bought one lol. but yes it SHOULD be the obvious choice

Tora, as per our pm conversation, the forester xt was the final decision...really tough over the merc since they are easily swayed by the brand name, but the quality was not there.

Thank you, and it was the "middle" trim level.

VIC played a big part in that decision...your thread included.

Glad I could help, and see if it's the mid level, when you pick up the top model it won't be any comparison

WRX

FXT
Venza
RAV4
Highlander
FJ Cruiser
CX-7
9-3 Convertible/Sport Combi

There are a few that might fit in your criteria depending on how much discount you can get (eg. RDX)

For what it's worth, I really like my v6 Rav4. Great SUV. Amazing in the snow on heritage mountain in Port Moody.

Ive been reading about the new SHO and I will have to wait until its out in the wild. There are a lot of forum trolls saying how it could "beat this" and "my Audi S6 sucks compared to the new SHO"

and on the other side of the coin, lots of "that AWD system is too biased for front wheel drive" and so forth

I would also add the honda CR-V, it's been a great car for the last 6 years.

Going to go on a FXT test drive tonight, I am going to bring up the 2009 STI while there, because i had not realized the pricing to be so great.

We will hit up the hondas and the mazdas potentially. Problem is that the wife is really picky and actually loves cars as much as I do, but at the same time has maternal instincts rather than suicidal instincts.

oh no! ive spent the past 3 weeks researching this vehicle and testing it for the parents in-laws. I really tried hard to like the car, but the subaru utilitarian in me saw that it was not worth the money.

you can really see where they cut costs big time on this car, but biggest point, the rear will only sit two non "large" adults.

you want "real" AWD, drop the RDX and EX35...

Forester, Toyota SUVs both are good...
