Default 97 legacy...sti swap

I am a complete noob

i searched...read tons of swap info on these forums

My rear main seal is on its way out and so is my tranny on my legacy outback limited...instead of working on this 2.5 liter engine i was hoping to swap in something a little more fun

Does anyone have any experience with this swap?

You need to search harder and not fake it would have found a guy named Storybooksin- he has done a 2003 WRX ~ '92 Legacy and just recently a 2005 STI ~ '96 Legacy Wagon

Also you might have found some other people as well including one entitle my dad's project from hell and another my first swap '98L 2.2L to EJ20G these are all really good swap stuff if you want specific answers you can ask me I am working on a 2002-2003 WRX ~ 95 Legacy Wagon full drivetrain and interior

look up these swaps and read them through there is good stuff (they won't pertain right to your model but the older swaps are all similar to an extent) you can also pm storybooksin and see if he will help you out, he is in my local forum and is really nice he can be busy though

Yes, it has been done. I've done a lot of Legacy's lately, not all of them STi though. Have you considered doing a 2.0?

^^^ try a WRX swap STI swaps are a lot more complicated (not the word I am exactly looking for) like the DCCD and all the other features that come with the new models even from 02/03 to 04 the safety features and anti-theft features have changed and can add a lot of difficulty to the swap.

Remember the STi's have immobilizers and wont start without them, defiantly look at STI swap for Dummies ask questions there are a lot of good people who watch that thread

Zephyr side note-- what type of swaps did you do I myself need some help

You name it and chances are pretty high that I've done it. Every JDM WRX version, old ass legacy turbo's, USDM WRX and STi. Name the car that it's going into and I've done it. 93 to present on the Impreza line, Legacy's and Foresters.

Shoot me an IM if you've got a specific question.

+1 for the zephyr. did the wiring on an 03 2.0L into 97 legacy swap we did. plus did a great job on a COMPLETE sti harness merge into an rs. i agree with both posts above. sti into anything is exponentially harder if you are doing the entire driveline. engine is still harder for the same reasons listed above, primarily immobilizer. but like the man says, zephyr has done a few wiring swaps...

I live in New Jersey. Everyone needs a 2.0 turbo motor in their Subaru.

Zephyr do you do any work on the blocks before you drop them into the car... I was thinking about doing the head gaskets, timing belt, and supporting belts, do you recommend anything else?

Hell no. If I buy an engine it comes with a guaranty. Granted I pull the timing belt covers off and inspect the timing marks before I put it in. The only thing I'll do to an engine before I put it in the car is change the plugs and fill it with oil. Other then that it's just inspections. No reason to blow money on an engine that is supposed to be "good". I would consider a timing belt on a motor that is high milage ie appoching the end of the service life of the timing belt etc. but most motors that are pulled and used for swaps are not approching 90k+ miles.

well the thing is I am looking for a donor from an Insurance auction so it will most likely not have a guarantee on the engine or well any of it actually. That is why I asked

Look at the numbers on the odometer, if they are high change the timing belt. If the car is still capable of running start it before you buy it and see if anything is wrong. No reason to do work and pay for parts you didn't need to replace.
