Default STi gauge cluster in a BD

I had gotten white faced over lays and I'm not really happy with them and I also can't get my needles back to how they were after taking them out and putting them back in probably 50 times (there sticky nomader how far I put them in or don't put them in) so I want to go with what I wanted originaly, a WRX or STi red/orange glow cluster I would prefer the STi because it goes to 160mph and its says "STi" where the WRX one says Impreza and I don't have a Impreza, but people seem to sell the WRX ones alot cheaper so I might have to just live with it but...

1. will it fit in just fine or will some mods have to be done and how extensive? just cutting a tab off hear or there or will I have to fabricate a mount or screw holes?

2. I know its not plug and play and the wires have to be spiced but I would like to splice my stock BD GT gauge plugs on to the STi cluster so I could remove the cluster in the future without cutting the wires or undoing it all. I am planing on taking the gauge cluster to a custom car shop here and having them do the wireing but will everything be functional? I know the tires on the STi are almost exactly the same diameter so that shouldnt be a problem but will every thing elce work? Gas gauge CEL's and such? (I know the DCCD light isn't going to light up if I don't have a DCCD)

I'll work but you'll have to do a lot of work to make the cluster fully functional. You'll need to switch over to a 3 wire VSS. The 98 Legacy has a two wire and will not run the STi cluster that way.

Take the two cluster harnesses and merge them. It's not hard just time consuming and you'll need either a pinout for both at minimum. I woud recommend a full wiring diagram.

...huh? lol

so do I get the 3 wire VSS from a wrx or STi? does it have to be the same year and modle that the cluster came from?

"Take the two cluster harnesses and merge them." does merge=splice the wires?

whats a pinout for both at minimum?

on the 99+ Impreza, Legacy or Forester the VSS is three wire, you can pick up the piece that goes in the transmission and swap that over. You'll need the plug for that too. It doesn't matter what year it is out of.

The plugs that go into the cluster on both cars are completely different so you'll need to cut the plugs off the STi cluster and merge/splice them onto the cluster harness from the Legacy.

having the diagram from both is going to make it the easiest to figure out which wire connects with which. On a later model RS or if you were doing a RS cluster in you could just depin the plug that goes into the body harness and repin it. The STi harness and Legacy harness are too different and you're just going to have to cut and splice.
