Impreza GC8 desperate for help

ok so awhile back my car got to where it was running pretty rough and started to stall out for no apparent reason so after a lil bit of down time and after I installed an ewg I start it up and I notice its running extremely rich (even for my car) and I try to rev it up a bit but it wont rev over 3k and once it gets to 3k it all irratic like its about to stall and it deffinitly isnt drivable so I take it to a shop they run a compression check & leak down test both of which are negative, so they tell me the only thing left for them to do is pull the motor check the internals and sort through all the wiring, all of which is at an $80 per hour rate an I dont have that kind of $ to spend right now

so I asked them in your perfesional opinion what do you believe it to be and they said that its prob out of time due to a jumped timing belt if not they said it has to be in the wiring, so a $120 gates timing belt and a $160 tensioner later it runs exactly as it did before...

any sugestions as to what could be causing this?

Is your laptop connected when this is happening? Whenever my laptop is connected and the EMU software is running and I try to start the car, it asks if I want to connect then goes super rich and dies. If I start the car with my laptop connected and ON, then rev the car to 2k, then launch and sync the emu software, it's fine.

have you tried to re send your current maps/setup to the EMU? Because of the above issue, I recommend turning the car to ON, but not started, launching the software, then after it syncs, open your latest map/setup from the laptop, send file to emu, then quit, shut the car off. Wait 5-10 secs, then try to start.

ok I tried what you said #522 and let me clairify when you say resend you mean the "export to main unit" option correct?

if so this didnt change anything exect I threw 2 new codes Im currently throwing a p117(engine coolant temp circuit low imput), p122(TPS/pedal position sensor A circuit low imput) & p403(EGR flow circuit malfunction)

the car wont even rev to 3k now it goes to about 2k then either stalls or almost does but oddly enough it idles quite smooth even though its super rich

Yeah, that's what I meant. Sorry that didn't help.

It sounds like an electrical issue to me at this point, especially with circuit low error codes. Something is sapping current away from your sensors. Not sure if it your EMU unit itself or wiring for it, like a bad ground. When your car is on or idling, does the emu warning light flash red at any point? It should pulse that orange color or green if communicating with a laptop.

Can you check fuel trims? With tunes that are too rich, the ECU maxes out it's ability to pull fuel and the car will die. When I had the issue with my laptop I described above, I would watch the short term trims go all the way to -29 while idling and then the car would shut off.

This stuff is always tricky for me to figure out, especially not being able to see the car directly, so hopefully some others will chime in too.

I think a little more detail with your setup would help

It's not internal that I am somewhat sure of.

Think about it...

If it jumped timing; the leakdown test would have revealed that as one valve or another would likely be open at the wrong time.

View your logs and make sure that there is not too much fuel being dumped in at the wrong time. Also, make sure your turbo is actually spinning. I had an exhaust gasket fall apart and shoot up to my turbo and jam up the hot side wheel at one time. An easy test would be to load in a neutral map (where no fuel is added anywhere) and remove the c-clip from the wastegate actuator and then wire the wastegate open with some bailing wire or a zip tie. Doing that will eliminate the possibility that its turbo related. Also, check the plugs. Are they black because of too much fuel or white due to too little fuel?

Also, go into your programming and double check that you have the correct before and after values entered in for your injector sizes.

Report back.

ok so I just went out and fired it up turbo was spining freely but I dont have a neutral map to load up but it seemed fine, oh btw I have a ewg so no need to wire the actuator

and the plugs were just replaced 2 days ago from where they had fouled out

injector values checked and set at 280cc and 720cc

but about viewing the logs what areas do I need to load on to the logger to read while I log the info, and how can I acess the saved datalog files so i could post them for you to see and tell me what you think?

Curious, did you hard wire your EMU in or use Philsine's DB25 connector method?

I would log:
Airflow IN OUT
INJ IN OUT
IGN IN OUT
RPM
VEH SPEED (had another car once that thought it was going 100mph all the time)
PSI
AFR (if connected)
Throttle.

That should do it, so just about everything. If you click start, log the data for a bit maybe rev it up some etc, then click stop. You can then click the little save icon in the logger window and save it where ever you want. Then, post it someplace on the net, and one of us can download, load into our logger and play it back. If you don't want to post, email it to one of us. You can pm me if you like for my email, not sure I will be able to look at it this weekend though.

Seems if you have the water temp and tps tapped then that might explain the low input. EGR i'm not sure about.

A bit of advice when saving data logs...

For the file name, save it by the date and time you made the log. this will make it easier for you to remember which was your latest.

example...

A log made on Feb 20th at 5:12 PM would be 02202009_1712

Use the underscore instead of a space when separating the time since some uploaders won't recognize a space and may kick back teh file or say invalid name.
