Question deformed four legged spider intake?

im curious as to what the heck this extra...hole...thing...that is running along the side of the intake manifold on my 98 impreza L
i have included a VERY bad illustration of it ...i dont have much of an idea as to what it is for, i assume whatever its supposed to do its not doing it, because nothing is attatched to it, its being closed off simply by a metal plate that is secured over the opening by one screw (only one that i can see that is)
and another thing...im really not too sure the engine that is in it was the original engine, mabey would help in some way, i dont know
im really just curious..

I may be wrong but I think that runs to the brake booster.

hmmm...whats a brake booster?...
well obviously somthing that has to do with the brakes but specificaly and how does it do it?...
it looks like there was somthing attatched to this opening once because there is just a plate covering it and a few empty machine screw holes on the engine that have no corrosion around them so evidently somthing was removed from the engine, probably the brake booster??

That kind of looks like where my EGR valve is, but I do have a 95 though, so...

I have the same thing on MY97. Either on the 98 or 99's they got rid of the valve. I know defiantly it is not on MY99 2.5RS.

here's two more shots of the egr valve

Camera positioned above left strut tower, facing rear of intake manifold

Camera pointing down at intake manifold, above erg valve

I know somebody that also has a 95 Legacy (same year as mine) that doesn't have an egr valve. So it seems that they put egr valves on some, but not on others...

Default That's weird . . .

So I guess there are two different ecu's for the 95s. One incorporating EGR functions and one not . . . Really strange.

1995 was the first year for OBD2 to
appear on Subaru US models. That year,
it was only used with 2.2 l/AT powertrain.
And EGR was introduced as a part of
OBD2, so there are '95 cars both
w. and w/o EGR valve.
