Default Phase I EJ25 swapped with Phase II 25

I've looked all over NASIOC and have yet to find a clear answer to my question, and I apologize if this has been asked a million times before. I blew the head gasket in my 98 phase I EJ25 (in my Forester), and found an 01 phase II (From an Impreza RS). Various posters on this site run with the old ECU, but some say you have to rewire "everything." What am I looking at here, does it require a full rewiring, or is it fairly plug and play? Can I just take the phase II ECU and go? ANY information or help or points in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Plus, is there anyone within an hour or so of Poughkeepsie NY who would do this? Thanks again.

I had to do some searching, but I knew I had read a thread in which a guy had done a successful DOHC/SOHC swap. The short answer is it isn't simple, but from the sound of it he was/is running a SOHC Phase II engine using the Phase I ECU. Here's the thread in question, mechman900 is the guy who did the swap. His post is near the bottom.

Unfortunately, he doesn't provide a whole lot of specifics, as he had done it a while ago and couldn't remember everything.

As far as using the Phase II ECU, that would be waaaaay more difficult. The Phase I EJ25 ECU plug is completely different than anything that Subaru used before or after. You'd have to do a lot of re-wiring to either put the Phase II harness into the car (along with the Phase II ECU), or pull all the wiring out of the Phase I plug and re-wire everything into Phase II plugs. I'm not even sure how feasible that is.

Thanks a lot for pointing me in the right direction, we'll see if I can't figure any of this out and get my damn car running.

Sounds like you are looking to swap PH1 - > PH2 (motor & ecu) vs doing a hybrid. If so, the rest is OT.

IMHO, the ARP head stud kit went a long way in fixing the HG problem. I'm presently running a PH2 short block under my DOHC heads w/ stock MY98 EM-everything else.

One of the biggest reasons I'm looking to do the swap is because the engine has 188k on it, but the car is completely rust free and straight, and I see no reason to abandon it. But it's a fair amount of miles, and although these engines run a long time, I don't imagine it would go for toooo much longer than this. I'll have to do some research on a hybrid swap, and maybe that would be the best bet.
