Question turbo whine

Ever since I got my 04 BajaT (bought it with 58k miles) I've always noticed that the turbocharger whines quite a bit when it's pushing moderate to high boost.

Just recently discovered endwrench.com - great site for detailed mechanical stuffs for our Subarus! I found this article: http://endwrench.com/images/pdfs/UnderNov07EW.pdf

Aside from what I suspect is a cracked oil feeder line, is that whine sound a symptom of a turbocharger that's on it's way out? Check out the last page under Shaft Play at the above mentioned article.

some do say that turbo 'whine's' like a supercharger before it goes out, but this isn't always the case. a rip in the inlet pipe can also lead to a 'whine' sort of sound.

There is something else that our cars are susceptible to: our turbo oil feed lines...one of them has a mesh screen that can clog and cause oil starvation.

This can shorten stock turbo life, the fix is to just cut the screen out. On a larger turbo, especially after market ball bearing units, the result is death of turbocharger within a couple thousand miles or less.

Right, no aside from a K&N drop in, it's all stock.

I decided to get on it on my way home from work today and didn't notice nearly as much whine as I've heard in the past, so perhaps it's a bit random or weather dependent.

It still just smokes occasionally, not all the time - and lightly. Burning oil. And I know for sure it's coming from up under the turbo heatshield.

friggen cold miserable weather. Can't wait til bike-riding weather comes around again! Then I might be able to get some things done around here.

if you're burning oil make sure you check it every 100 miles or so. even a light every-once in a while smoke under boost can quickly drain your oil.
