Subaru has introduced the new Impreza WRX STI A-Line edition and, like an old friend who checks in with you from time to time, it's always nice to hear from Subaru, isn't it?

The A-Line is a more accessible, comfy version of the WRX STI meant to attract more distinguishing and less dedicated customers to Subaru. It features Subaru's 2.5 liter Boxer engine, coupled with a 5-speed automatic transmission trademarked by Subaru as the SPORTSHIFT.

Comfort comes by way of an 8-directional electronically adjustable driver's seat with optional leather seats and leather trim on the inner door paneling highlighted with silver stitching. A new color, "Satin White Pearl", is also made available in the A-Line.

But this WRX STI A-Line's still got the boogie. That 2.5 liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine comes with 300 hp and 350 Nm of torque. A single scroll turbocharger helps the engine produce a steady stream of torque within a mid-rev to high-rev range.

And there is lots of technology to keep this Subaru humming with speed and comfort. A Downshifting Blipping Control allows the automatic transmission to have a quick chat with the engine management system to increase engine speed while downshifting gears in order to have as smooth a shift as possible.

The VTD (Variable Torque Distribution) AWD system provides electronic control of torque distribution between the rear and front axles dependent on driving conditions to maintain a keen sense of balance on the road for this WRX STI.

There's also a Tumble Generation Valve that controls air intake for maximum combustion efficiency under the hood.

Good to hear the new news, Subaru. Hope to see you around again soon.

Looks like Tribeca brakes on there, and that shift console is not bad, just needs a different shifter knob.

Honestly, I can see this selling quite well, and the 5EAT is not a bad trans.

So it got LGT brakes. Apparently they managed to beef up the Jatco derviced slushbox a bit.

Now it's not only ugly, it has a slushbox as well. Wining formula indeed.

It even has paddle shifters. Nice touch. It should sell well. I wonder if a North American version will be available.

^^I dunno. People who want a softer sporty car have loads of choices already eg Audi, BMW, Infiniti, etc I really can't see someone saying "I really want an STI, but I want it to be softer and easy to drive"

I read the title of the thread as "Seat" fans - IE, that this would have Recaros or something. But an automatic, softer STI? Why do we need a poseur STI? What's wrong with, say, the Legacy 2.5GT?

It might increase sales, but it lessens the heritage of the STI logo. There are a ton of Corollas and Camrys sold, but how many people buy them for the excitement of driving and not as an appliance?

Right, why not stick the STi motor in an LGT and price it around the STi?

Oh, its an incredibly competitive market filled with a lot of higher end cars. I'm not sure if it's a safe move - but its a smart one. As hard as it is to believe, some people just want an automatic. This opens the field up to a ton of people who previously turned away from the STi because it only came with a manual.

Personally, if I buy an STi, I'd get the manual because I love having that "control" over a car, but that is just me.

I just hope Subaru doesn't become like Harley Davidson. Harley's had a ton of hardcore riders who carried them throughout their entire span until early 2000's. Then Harley decided to become a "high end brand" and shafted most of their dedicated riders.

Now, with the economy being complete crap, the "high end" people aren't buying motorcycles and since they pissed off their dedicated riders - they are doing quite crappy.

Morale of the story is: go after the high-end people, but remember all the fans that carried you before you got big.

Well, since this is the "soft serve" STI, I doubt they engineered the DCCD into the 5eat.

I dunno about this car, no brembos, power seat, slushbox... Maybe good for the wife, but otherwise? I wonder how much $, better be considerably less than the regular STI, considering you get way less STI. Maybe this means that they will put the 5eat into the Forester XT and the 2.5GT?

Uhh.. it's Subaru's home market that went soft, not the US.

Are you trying to say that there was ever a non-ugly STI?

Default Might we see this engine/tranny combo...

...in the new Legacy? A 300 hp and 5EAT US-spec Legacy GT?

Also, my guess is the 5EAT has been beefed up to handle the extra torque—which leads to the next question: Might this HD 5EAT make it's way as an option for the Subie diesel?
