I searched and yes i found alot of threads covering this mod. Only thing it's for previous models of impreza. Anyone got around and did it on the 08-09 models?

what exactly are you trying to do now? Make it able to turn the fogs on all the time or just get 12v directly to the fogs?

If you want 12v, find the fog relay and connect a 12v source to the right connection on the back... not that hard just need to know where the relay is.

Want to do the mod so the fog lights are independently operational. I know where the relay is and all. Just looking if someone else did it and got some more info on it.

I took some photos of the relay and it's wiring, which I post here when I get a chance later tonight or tomorrow. I started to chase the wiring and diagram it, but ran out of time for today. When I get the Rally Innov. light bar in a couple weeks, I will resume as I have some plans for how those lights are activated too.

I also did the DRL disable and aimed the fog and head lamps.

Find the fog light relay. Meter the wires to see which one allows for it to close and jump the one which comes from the headlights. If the relay is unpowered but closed, then jump the power input from ignition.

Nice, let me know also how you actually remove the panel to get access.
How is the headlight aiming doing for you? Better light output?

I have photos

But it's not hard...two silver screws under the side cover and the rest are clips. Pull firmly on the lower panel on each side of the steering wheel and it pops right out.

Don't know yet...haven't had it outside in the dark yet. I will say that both headlamp modules were aimed too high from Japan, so I knocked them down about an inch on the garage wall 6 feet in front of the car, so we'll see. The fog lights were also too high, but that one was harder to judge so further adjustment may be needed.

Watching....

Wanting to know how to wire fogs to turn on independently from headlights. Photos would be great but at least a specific wire description would be nice.!

Thanks all!

From what i read about on previous models, it should be the same for this model aswell. It just doesnt help when you dont have a wiring diagram...

So you did get around to make them work independently?

Sweet. Maybe I'll work on why the indicator won't light up on the dash now...seems that it would be nice if it lit up when the fogs are on, regardless of the headlight switch. All the functions are controlled by the BIU (body integrated unit), so unless the BIU tells the car to do it (i.e. light up the fog light indicator on the IP) it won't happen.

*Edit* Mr. Durden, photos as promised (hosted on Flickr):

Fog lamp relay is the bottom right gray relay

Backside of the relay. Black/Green and Violet/yellow are the relay coil

I am looking over the wiring diagrams now to see about the dash indicator light, and to maybe see about making the fogs activated by the DRL relay.

I think I have it...

-Cut the pin 27 Black/Green wire a couple inches above the back of the relay panel
-Provide 12v from the fuse panel to the relay side of the cut B/G wire
-Put some electrical tape on the hanging cut end of the B/G wire (from the wire harness)
-Leave pin 28 (Violet/Yellow) alone.

This way the relay coil is active any time the key is in the ignition but BIU still sees the signal between the relay and the switch so the indicator light should light up. If I'm reading the diagram on the link above correctly, he bypassed the low beam relay and the BIU.

I'm going to meter this out later and see if I'm right.

Just got done getting the fog lamps to work independently and I'll go through a step by step on what I did. I don't mean to take anyone's thunder away, but I hope my input helps everyone out. BTW my car is the 2008 Impreza 2.5i.

I took pics but don't feel like editing them yet so I'll post them up soon. Forgive all the other "foreign" wires. I've integrated a lot of stuff into my car.

The relay responsible for switching on the fog lamps is as you all know painfully restricted by the headlamps. The 12v switch (relay) is supplied only when the headlights are on and the switch to ground (relay) is only available when both the fog lamp switch is turned and the headlamps are on. So basically the head lamps govern the entire relay switch...at least it has a constant 12v feed for the fog lamps. BTW don't bother using that 12v constant wire for the fog lamps to supply voltage for the relay's 12v switch...all that does is turn on your headlamps. Anyways here's the more pertinent info:

What the fog lamp can do after mod:
- Turn on independently of the headlamps when key is in the "On" position
- Then obviously will shut off at ACC and below
- Fog Lamp indicator light will turn on only when both the Fogs and Lows are on, not just the Fogs
- You will now be able to have Hi's Low's and Fogs on all at once (a plus for some i guess)

Whats required:
- About 20-22 gauge wire will do
- One diode (I only had 1 Amp ones which will do the trick)
- Taps

Procedure:
- Disconnect battery, feeling risky? keep it on (that's what I did...stupid really, I popped a fuse while diagnosing)
- Remove panel b/w the driver side door and the dash
(pops off, just grab the corner at the bottom and pull)
- Remove panel under the steering wheel
(two screws under the first panel and the rest of it pops off)
- Remove black metal guard under the steering column
(two bolts 10mm)
- Locate fog lamp relay
(Left of the under dash fuse panel there is a relay panel. Its on the second column, fourth one down)
- Behind the relay there are two wires of concern black/green and violet/yellow
(black/green is the 12v switch coming from the low beam headlights, violet/yellow is the ground switch from the lighting control cluster)
- Cut the black/green wire and splice the wire (relay side) to a 12v switched source. I just used the 12v wire from the side view mirror tilt control harness. Close enough and easy to tap.

- Cap off the other cut end of the black/green wire

- Locate the harness for the lighting control cluster and disconnect
(the harness is just under the control cluster)
- Locate the violet/yellow wire on the harness, it should be adjacent to a black wire
(DON'T CONFUSE THIS WITH THE VIOLET/YELLOW WIRE BEHIND THE RELAY, they are not directly connected)
*Note: The violet/yellow wire of the control cluster has a 12v constant (low amperage I assume) whether the car and/or headlight is on or off. However when you turn the fog lamp knob, it makes a connection with the black wire next to it and becomes ground). But of course the violet/yellow wire behind the relay is still not grounded unless the headlamps are switched on.

- Now you'll need to make a diode isolated wire to connect the violet/yellow wire behind the relay and the violet/yellow wire at the harness

- Splice in your diode isolated wire in the direction that blocks the 12v from the harness to the relay.
(I am not sure if the diode isolation is necessary but I don't know what those 12 volts coming from the harness would do if it went to the relay. So to play it safe use a diode)
- Test it, hide all the wires away nicely, put it back together and enjoy.

Cheers!

PS
I have also disabled the DRL via disconnecting the resistor in the right bumper/fender well. I still doubt its a module though...with ceramic covered with a heat sink aluminum frame i think its only a resistor. However I could be wrong. But anyways, the independent fogs work with the DRL disabled.
