Default how far does a bullet travel out of a .40 hand gun?

On average, if I went to a open field and shot a .40 hand gun, how far away would the bullet land and after what point would the bullet not be lethal?

I've always wondered that..

Level shot or angled? Simple physics man.

Velocity of a .40 is approximately 320-350m/s.

Starting height about 1.5m.

The tools are all there.

id be lethal the entire way, do you think the bullet somehow slows down in the air that it will just bounce off you like a paintball?

how could it be lethal the entire way, it would eventually decrease velocity to point where it would do little to no damage ..

no?

It's gonna be lethal all the way. If you fire a bullet straight up into the air, the terminal velocity on the way down is enough to kill someone.

NO, once it leaves the barrel, something is getting a hole in it.

If you shot it level from shoulder height, its going to have enough power to penetrate until it hits the ground.

ps... Your name makes this humorous.

newsflash folks:

our atmosphere does create a small amount of friction against a flying bullet, so the bullet is slowing down from the moment it leave the barrel.

there is a point when the bullet is slow enough to not cause as much damage

Firing level from 1.5m above the ground at a velocity of 330m/s the bullet will travel 181.5m before hitting the ground. The bullet will slow down, but terminal velocity of any bullet is still enough to be lethal. It may do less damage, but within the level firing trajectory of a .40 I would assume that the whole distance traveled would be considered extremely dangerous.

Answer to OP's question = 181.5m or 595 feet from a level shot on level ground, assuming the shot is made from about 5 feet.

now, what would happen if I climbed to the top of Mt Everest, and fired a bullet straight up at the space station or a satellite?

Ok, so what if you could somehow fire a bullet straight up to the point where it slows down, stalls, and then comes down right on your noggin (yeah, yeah... but what if).

Would it kill you then or just hurt like a mofo on your cranium?

Kill you. That's why you are not supposed to fire your gun into the air. So called "celebration shots."

mythbusters did this (i know their methods arent always the best) but this one seemed pretty legit, and most bullets fall sideways, not straight down, makeing their terminal velocity not enough to break a bone, much less kill you.

Wow, some people just don't have a good grasp of physics. Shooting the gun at a 45 degree angle from the ground with warrant the farthest distance from the shooter. It will most certainly kill someone if it hits them in the head. Yes, it won't have the same penetration as if it was point blank, but as others have said the terminal velocity of a bullet will yield enough force to do serious damage. Remember the penny thing where you drop it off the Empire State building and it was supposed to kill you? Well, mythbusters proved that wrong, but they did say it would cause a lot of pain and may chip your skull. So thats a penny, imagine a 200 gram bullet.

You'd need a hell of a long rifle, and a ****-load of powder behind the bullet to shoot a round into space. Even from the top of Everest.

we arent talking about a 45 degree angle. we are talking about a ninety degree angle. sounds like someone doesnt have a good grasp of reading.

though the bullet drops at the SAME rate both shot out of the gun AND someone dropping another bullet from their hand to the ground.

So the farther you want the bullet to hit, the higher up you have to angle it, where 45 degrees will get you the farthest landing and the most air time to slow down d/t resistance. But now that you've angled it up, it now gets to fall down from a higher height.

Ill let someone run the numbers as I'm lazy
