Default difference between 93-01 impreza L and RS

Hi guys, I know this is probably a trite subject, but I tried searching the forums for past threads with this subject, but came up empty.

My main question is whether there are any major differences between the Impreza L models compared to the RS models, besides engine/drivetrain and the hood? I am looking at a 1995 Impreza L AWD and it seems to be a good price, but if there are any major advancements in the 98+ RS, I would like to know.

Thanks

Well there's the obvious stuff you already know about - engine, hood, headlights (99+), badges, bumpers (again, 99+), the fabric on the seats, the leather shift boot, the steering wheel I think is different. The 99+ have white faced gauges, some of the older Imprezas don't have rear sway bars at all, the 99+ shifter linkage is improved. The clutch in a '95 might be a cable clutch instead of hydrolic. The RS transmission has close-ratio gearing and I think the L had a 3.90 final drive whereas the RS has a 4.11 (I believe... could be wrong). As you know Subaru improved the car whenever the rally team decided they wanted extra reinforcing here and there... so there were continual chassis tweaks. The RS also has different springs and struts (but there are a lot of RS owners who have upgraded their suspension and who still have the stock stuff sitting in the garage, like myself, or you could go aftermarket). And the 00+ RS has a rear LSD.

Yeah, that's it off the top of my head. Oh, the trunk springs on the RS might be a bit stiffer to accomodate the wing.

As a person who owned both a '98 L and a '01 RS, I really didn't notice that much of a difference in performance. But I'm not an autocrosser. I don't take the car to 10/10ths. Er, well I never pushed the '98 that hard. I also didn't modify it at all.

cool thanks for the reply. If all things go well and the car turns out to be OK, then it looks like I might use it as a project car.

Thanks for the help

well i have both

a 95L and a 2001RS
what nick said is pretty much spot on...

interior is different (fabric)

suspension is better on the RS - easily swapped on the L

no rear sway bar on the L, and i dont need one!
as it's a race car, no rear bar actually makes it turn in faster!

chassis, dash, arm rest, headliner, hood, headlights, grill, rear and front bumper, all different. and a lot of the older L's dont have sideskirts either (easily added)

the headlights on the 95 are actually better and brighter than those on my 2001! the 01's are plastic... the 95's are glass

parts are easily swapped out, and the L is not tough at all to up grade... basically, if it fits the RS, it will fit the L (eventually!)

good luck!
have fun!

Hows the steering on the older L's? Do they require more input than a RS? Hey Subiegal, cool L! From your experiences, would you say that the 95L chassis would be stiff enough for most applications? I know you've done a lot of racing and what not. Thanks.

i find the stock chassis to be a tad lacking...
nothing that a different suspension cant help compensate for!

the steering is realitively the same...
off road, with no sway bar (rear) i actually dont need to input as much into the wheel to get it to turn in!!! turns in great!

on road.... same diff...
but you have to be ready for this easy turn in,
or it may catch you out!

hehehehe

suprised to see you guys left some things out.

the RS has ABS. The L in 98-01 didn't...and I'm assuming earlier models didn't either

the 00-01 RS has a rear LSD, which no other older models have...

of course, I could be way off here, since I don't know much about the older models, but I wouldn't think they'd take away options for the 98-01 model years.

Some L's had rear drums while premium LX had rear disc & ABS.

RS always had discs.

I believe you couldn't get factory cruise control on 98-01 L's.

I am pretty sure my MY01 RS headlights are glass.
