That could be a great system and game. I'm curious though as to the interest in a handheld gaming system though. We'll see soon enough.

GBA is an excellent handheld system. The games finally play like real games, not like scaled down versions of their console counterparts.

For you Chicago area people, I'll try to bring my GBA to the next meet.

Hehe, imports rule.
Too bad the import scene is slowly dwindling.

Anyway, my honest impression of the GBA...it sucks.

Im SO not impressed with it. The screen they are using is crap. Id rather look at the oldschool 4 tone LCD matrix of the BameBoy, rather then this. I think the GBC has a far better screen. The screen is just to easily blured by motion, and in faster games, becomes nearly unplayable. Especially if your in a non-darkened area.

Again we see another hype product from Nintendo. Fortunatly, this one will have some staying power, and wont go the way of the dodo, like some other Nintendo products.

I think "The Big N" is starting to ride their brand name, and sell bassed solely on name recognition and Pokemon. Their content is getting unoriginal, and played out. And after youve played an "original" title 10 times in the course of a decade, it isnt so original anymore.

Besides that, someone already beat nintendo to the GBA, you may remember it...it was called the Game Gear from SEGA. Is it any wonder the two systems look alike? I think not.

Interest in a handheld game system? The original Gameboy is the best selling console EVER MADE with sales that are still strong after over 10 years. I'd expect the Gameboy Advance to be as, if not more, popular then the original.

Well, this is totally off topic and not at all about Subaru's, but I can't resist. Sorry.

Buck-O...what games have you played, and how much time have you put into the GBA? I can honestly say you're the first person I've heard of having a negative impression of it. I'm not a handheld fan at all and I'm loving the GBA.

I think the screen is great, I haven't noticed any blurring at all. Maybe you've played different games than I have? I've got Super Mario Advance, F-Zero, and Dracula X/Castlevania...Castlevania is just...wow...and the other 2 games play better than their console counterparts IMHO.

As far as the Game Gear vs the GBA...I see no similarities at all. The GG is like 3 times as large and eats batteries like they're going out of style. The basic design is similar I guess, but so are the NeoGeo Pocket and the Wonderswan. There's only so many comfortable designs for a handheld. And I can't think of one game for the GG that was memorable, to me at least. GBA's already got it beat there.

Disclaimer: I'm not trying to force my opinions on you, please don't take this as an attack. I'm just curious why you feel this way.

GBA is the best handheld console ever. I have Mario2 and it is better that the SNES all stars version. Have you seen vids of Tony Hawk 2? It is damn impresive.

The GBA looks really cool, but do you really find yourself playing games outside of your home much? I have a GBC and all I use it for is Tetris (which STILL rules to this day).

Other then the random airport trip, I don't get many opportunities to use it outside of my house, and at home,... it's all about the PS2

I was actually considering getting a GBA, but I already have a SNES with all the titles they've relaunched on the GBA so it would be kind of pointless.

Yup, its all about the PS2. I can't wait till GT3 comes out. That's the game on top of my list. Once the GBA comes to the US it is going to be cool to have 4 player link up battles with one cart.

You can find GBA's for around 140-150 right now.

I've been pretty damn impressed with it so far. The screen is really decent, seems as crisp as my old Turboexpress (remember that?) which had the best lcd ever affixed to a portable. The fact that it aint backlit blows, and you do need pretty good light to play. But I'm taking mine apart and letting my good friend the electronics engineer remedy that situation.. he says it shouldn't be too difficult
And I actually find myself playing this system more than I thought I would, since the games just look so nice on that screen!

Yeah... I was just about to mention that. TurboExpress was THE portable system!!!

Interestingly enough, TurboGrafx was supposed to be the SNES orginally. Kick ass system.

There was that Atari system too. Lynx! Good stuff!

Yep, they are selling the same thing that someone else made ten years ago. Much like manufacturers bragging about technologies on their 4X4s that the Brat had in 76!

Ive had my hads on one for about 3 months now. I am close personal friends with the owner of a large import store. He had one shipped next day air to him the day it was released in Japan. Hes not to incredibly impressed with it either. And while it is vastly greater then most handheld portible gaming systems out there, and leaps beyond the original GB, and even the GBC, its nothing really new. The back lit color LCD screen has already been done by everyone else but Nintendo, who said it was impraticle and used too much power. So they stuck with a nonbacklit 4tone amber black LCD matrix. Now all of the sudden they come out with a color handheld, and they act like they invented the color LCD screen. Sorry, its been done before, severl times, as others have posted above, already.

The bluring problem is a common motion ghosting effect that happens on almost all LCD displays, even the high quality ones have this problem. About the only way to comabt this proble is to project THROUGH the LCD matrix, alot like an LCD projector would. That reduces the effect greatly, however, backlighting only accentuates it. And for my eyes, its very annoying, and really detracts from the games.

The other thing that bugs me about the GBA, is that its really nothing special. Granted its far byond the OGB, or GBC, but its still not really any greater then a SNES. I mean come on, Mode 7 graphics? Please...this is first gen SNES stuff...F-Zero was the first game to use Mode 7, and we all know how old that is. And it seems like every GBA game has mode 7 and its being played out like some sort of AMAZING new technology. Graphcly im not impressed by the system. It looks like a SNES to me, and im not interested in playing games that are of no greater wuality then a SNES game, reguardless of how good the game was. Been there, done that.

It seems latly like Nintendo is simply strolling along on its brand name. They arent really bringin anything that revolutionary to the table...game cube, yeah , its ok looking. But the X-Box will kill it in just about every way. Plus N has to use propritary disks, and propritary this and that. And of course like all "N" stuff it will be over priced, and over hyped. Right now the only thing that Nintendo is really using to keep itself afloat is Pokemon. The single biggest cash cow they have ever had, and they are going to ride that sucker raw, straight to the bone and soak every last ounce of money out of it that they can. Its really disappointing to see Nintendo fall through the crapper like they are. First mistake, telling sony to tkae their CD SNES addon and shove it. Seconed mistake, making the N64 a cartridge bassed system, then never releasing the Super 64 drive. Third mistake, selling items bassed solely on name, and trendyness. People that will buy Game Cube, shop at Ikea (dont get me worng ive got alot fo Ikea in my house too), Drive a New Beattle, own an iMac, and listen to Barry Manalow all day, and have 2 kids ages 5-10 that think Pokemon is the geates thing since cotten underwear.

Anyway, sorry to rant. Im not totally impressed with the GBA, or the Game Cube. I think they are produts that are too little to late. Remember what happend to 3dfs when they tried to ride their brand name, and tell people what they did and didnt need bassed on what they thought? Oh wait...3dfx...i forgot, nvidia bought them.
Doesnt matter if you started a trend, if you cant continue developing new inovative products, and keep people coming back for somthing new, then you will go out of business, plain and simple. Its a ".com" marketplace anymore, anything can happen to anyone. No matter who you are.

I'm not sure at all what you people expected from the GBA.. A portable machine with a 10 inch widescreen display, and more processing power than a ps2.. and it runs on a watch battery for a year?

Reality check time!

gpxl: Castlevania is so good that I play in in the house all the time instead of playing my PS2. Yeah, PS2 is much more advanced, but Castlevania's got the gameplay, and I find that more important that flashy graphics. If you liked Symphony of the Night for PS, you've gotta play Circle of the Moon for GBA.

Langit: The GBA will be $100 when its released in the states.

Mazoku-

You have a point, a good NEW Castlevania game is almost worth the cost of admission alone. It'll be interesting to see what other oldies they update for the GBA.

I'm certainly not one to put graphics over gameplay, I actually still play my SNES as much (if not more) then my PS2. But that being said, I don't think what I've seen so far for the GBA is that much of an improvement over the SNES titles. I mean,... if I'm going to play at home, I might as well bust out Castlevania 4 on the SNES.

Of course,... I'm prolly just blowing smoke. I've owned just about every game system released since the orignal NES and I'll probably end up with a GBA and a Gamecube by next year
