Angry OT: I was woken up last night at 1:30 AM to the sound of...

I think my neighbor being thrown against my bedroom wall (from his/her apartment). This is not a joke. My entire bed moved, and I thought the picture on my wall was going to fall on me, so I jumped out of bed. The entire incident of multiple bangs on the wall and floor lasted about 5-10 minutes. I thought I could hear someones hand dragging on the wall too. It was really scary. I was waiting for a fist or a person to come through the wall into my bedroom, that is how hard and loud it was. I ran to the kitchen to get my phone, and started to dial for help, but I couldn't hear any yelling or screaming, so I didn't call. They stopped in about 5-10 minutes, but I could still hear people up, just in another room. I was home alone and could not remember their apartment number, so I decided not to call because I didn't want to go into the hallway and look at their door.

What do you guys think about this? What would you have done? This is really bothering me. I was up for almost another hour worried about it. I spoke with Heather this morning, and this happend to her over the weekend I think (which I didn't know). She said it sounded like someone screaming to get away from someone. She didn't call either for the same reason I didn't. Now that I know that, I would call next time, but wanted some opinions.

I really hate getting involved with this stuff, but man this is bothering me.

You sure it wasnt more of a 'love issue' than a fight issue?

Im not trying to make a joke out of it, I know it could be serious. But it would be kinda funny and embarassing if they were just humpin' and you called them or the cops or something.

if you suspect that it's not them just being extra-frisky in bed, then I would call. Too many domestic abuse cases go unnoticed, usually because the woman is too scared to ask anyone for help.

Since it's happened twice now within a week, I would definitely call the police next time you hear it. You can do it totally anonymously, so you won't have to worry about any backlash on you.

Just to add to this, I am the only apartment that joins with thiers. They are a couple about my age, maybe a few years older. No one lives below us (garage), and only one apartment is above them, but it is 2 floors, so the tenants we probably up a floor in the bedroom. That's why I was worried about calling too, since it would be pretty obvious it was me calling.

O, and he is a big guy (well everyone is bigger than me). I'm not knocking on his door. He'd rip my head off.

Ditto. Worse that happens is that they're embarrased by a cop after a frisky session.

Well, that is kind of why I didn't call Nate and Jim (the frisky part). I don't know, and without any yelling or screaming, I was hesitant to call. But, this does not happen often either..

Default unpopular opinion:

MYOB. Only call the cops if the ruckus is continuously disturbing you, like keeping you up at night, or knocking stuff off your wall. Otherwise, don't assume, and don't try to "save" somebody. You don't know the story. If they're not doing you harm, don't worry about it, and leave them alone.

Disturbing the peace, possible local noise ordinance, etc. If you suspect someone is being violently assaulted, you need to report it.

It's your moral, and, more importantly, legal imperative to call the police and report it if you think there's an abusive event going on. You can tell the police over the phone that you're concerned, but that you're afraid that your neighbor might hurt you if he finds out that you reported him... they'll be sensitive to that, and most police departments will do their level best to insulate you from the situation.

If it's frisky love, or someone hanging a few picture frames, it won't be any issue at all.

Since I've reported neighbors before, I'll give a little insight. Most cops aren't stupid and thus don't delvuge that it was jackarse in apartment XX that called. Most are even smart enough to show up and hang out in the hall, etc. and listen before tapping on the door. You have to remember the cops don't really like the domestics any more than you do so they want to have a reason before knocking.

I would just call and say that you were concerned about your neighbors. You were awoken out of a dead sleep because your bed pratically moved a couple of inches from the impact to the wall.

So, back to my story... When I was living in the condo about 12am, the idiot behind me in the house decided to take his stereo onto the his front porch and turn it up to 100. All the while signing at the top of his lungs. So, I called the cops. They showed up and walked up to him and told him that they could hear him at the bottom of his driveway making a ton of noise. Told him to go back inside. A couple of nights later, same thing happened. I called the cops again and they showed up and stopped by my condo first. They told me that he was an idiot (there exact words) and that one night that chased him all the way to his house and then arrested him... They said that they would talk to him and if we wanted to do this again, I would have to file a report. They went over again and he went back in the house, all drunk. I then moved out about a month later after my landlord sold the condo, but it was quiet the whole time.

Well,
Thanks for all the input. I'm not going to act on this one right yet, but next time I hear a peep, i'm calling the Police. They have some "other" car in the parking spot downstairs (and I know the owner is visiting them because he is blocking it with his motorcycle), so for all I know the guy has a buddy over and they were wrestling or something. I haven't seen any of them, but if I see her I might ask her in a polite way what was going on, and let her know I was concerned.

I can't wait to have my own house...

I think if you suspect that there's domestic abuse going on you need to call the cops.

From what you said *you* heard, there's no telling what it was. I mean, people do have some pretty vigorous sex now and then.

On the other hand, what Heather says she heard sounds like something entirely different, and something I'd call the cops over without a second thought.

Alternatively, you could have some of the bigger or more insane i-Clubbers stay a few nights at your place and wait for it to happen again.

PS: I'm in the "insane" column.

Need to report it. Would you rather be embarassed or would you rather have to live with knowing that you could have prevented something very bad from happening.

well I'm bigger than paul, and I'm definately insane

I would report it paul, but that's just me, even if you tell the police that it was such and such a night ago, they should be able to tell if it was a domestic situation but subtle clues- chich with two black eyes and stuff like that. hell I can even tell just from body language normally if someone gets or got the crap kicked out of them

speed safely

Well, I'm not worried about being embrassed myself. I could care less about that (you should know that about me know ). If it happened, it's already over. Not much I can do now. Even if I report it now, it will happen again if at some point if thats what really is going on.

Anyway, I saw the "guest" leaving the apartment before, but I was down the hall. I have a hard time believing this guy or gal would kick the crap out of his/her spouse with a guest staying over, so I think it was something else. Again, it was pretty inconclusive. Plus, they have watched some movies so loud I could hear them across my apartment, so that *might* have been what Heather heard. Now that I think about it, these tenants kind of suck..

I'm not taking it lightly though, please don't think I am brushing it off. If I see either of the tenants, I am going to say something (I'd rather do that and see a reaction than just call the Police). I can always call the Police after I speak with the tenants and see how they react. They are going to know it was me anyway (since I'm the only one with an adjoining wall), so might as well ask them first then report them.

I kind of put myself in their shoes. I'd rather have someone confront me first so I could explain what was going on. I don't have anything to hide. If they act all weird I'll know for sure, so I can just report it and call right away if something else every happens.

You could play it "dumb" and ask if everybody was okay the other night... You thought somebody might have gotten hurt by how hard the wall was hit, like possibly a bookcase fell over.... (Of course a person could have been flung into said bookcase, but you get the idea..)

Quote:

Well, that's could be true, of course it was probably more of the case that the guys was soo drunk he couldn't tell how loud the "music" (if that's what you wanna call it) was..

Probably a pretty smart move- if it really is a domestic violence situation (in the usual vein of male beating female) then there will be some kind of excuse- "oh yeah we were moving furniture" ... (at 2AM? hmmm) and you can decide more accurately if it sounds fishy. *

But if they say "yeah we're practicing for ameteur wrestling, c'mon over and be a ref or something, it's fun" then it is more likely legit.

It'l be interesting to see what happens, I'm sure there are plenty of nesic'ers who would be willing to stand in as "protection" in case something goes bad.
