2.5L turbo they have the same motor as an sti just smaller i/c and turbo and a catted uppipe.change those things and you've pretty much got an sti motor

I think the engine is more along the lines of the legacy 2.5 06+ WRX 2.5

No, the 04s and 05s are the STI motor and differ in the differences listed above, possibly the injectors are different too. But the block and internals are the same. The 06+s went to the Legacy version motor.

the injectors are the same and on the 04's you can also swap out the ecu plug and play with an 04 sti ecu to use sti maps for more hp but this only applys to 04's xt and sti

You could with the 05s as well if it wasn't for the immobilizer.

Incorrect, owned an 04, it has essentially the same internals as the STi, just smaller injectors, turbo, intercooler and uppipe. Pushed mine to a 12.9 ridiculously easy with a few small mods and the 4.11 5MT would launch like a MOFO.
