Question Good engine to put in a 95 Impreza?

So... I have a 1995 Impreza L with a blown up 2.2 and am wondering what all you Subaru masters would do in my situation. The more I read on here the more I want to drop something with some more horsepower in there. If I had a grand or so to blow on a different engine what should I get? I have a good 2.2 sitting in my garage but from what I have gathered they are not real quick without dropping more money into them than they are worth. So what are your thoughts? Neewb needs help!

What is the actual engine model? Is it like Ej20... Sorry, I am just not sure what to look for specifically.

No WRX Engines are easily a couple thousand dollars on ebay, around $7,000

your better off rebuilding your engine and putting in Forged Internals and then Setting it up for Turbocharging

but if you really want an engine swap and dont want to pay that much, for the engine itself, you can go the way I am going, EG33, a flat 6 engine from the SVX, but you will have to do alot more work as its not just drop in, you'll have to read up on it

You need to stop thinking more power and just put the good 2.2 in that you have already. That will give you the time you need to properly research, prepare and save for an engine swap. It always cost more than you budget.

wate. i had to scroll back up and look at what fourm i was in. this is the Subaru Conversions fourm right.

yank that NA EJ22 out and put in a EJ207. i dont know what these guys are talking about with Ebay engines costing $7000. the last EJ207 i put in an Impreza cost $1500 plus shipping. from JHOT on ebay. that was engine, trans. ECU, wiring, TMIC, Axels and all... minus rear diff and rear axels.

after the guy paid me to install it and bought the crossmembers and everything, i doubt he was into the car more than $4000...

do some research but dont let these guys tell you what to do. if you want to swap, there is lots of info on here...

From everything I have seen online there are a ton of JDM engines selling for under two grand. I have also found some front clips for various Subarus that all have more HP than a 2.2 for under two grand. The only engines that seem to be going for seven thousand are the STI engines and thats not really what I am looking for. I am looking for a good engine that can be put in the car that will be worth the effort to add goodies to. My big hang up right now is if I am going to have to put a new engine in there I would rather not just put another 2.2 in there when I have the chance to do something different (i.e. better). A 2.2 to 2.2 engine change... Mmmm exciting! I have a daily driver already and I am in no hurry to get this built so why not do something fun?

Yeah, I have been meaning to ask about that. What's the deal with these guys on ebay with the jdm ej20 engine and tranny packages for under 2K? I noticed most of them come with a cut wiring harness but I am just wondering what your take is on them.

I found a good deal on this: JDM 94-up Subaru Impreza gc8 ej20 2.0 dohc (one turbo) complete motor + 5spd-4wd-m/t (front clip) 260hp- Any way to make it pass emissions testing in CA? If so I am on it like flies on poop...

CA emissions is going to leave you with USDM EJ205 swap as the cheapest most cost effective swap. I think I saw one on ebay for 1500. But your OBDI so I don't know.
