Default South Bend/DxD HD Stage 1 Clutch

Car: 2004 WRX
Trans: Stock 5-spd (111,XXX miles)
Flywheel: Stock resurfaced
Clutch: South Bend/DxD HD Stage 1 (full face organic)

I waited a few months to do this review, as I really wanted to put this clutch through its paces in all situations before I recommended it. I now have about 15,000 miles on this clutch setup and I can say without a doubt, it is the best aftermarket clutch I have ever driven in a Subaru or any other make (and I've driven quite a few in my 18 years behind the wheel). I debated for quite a while about upgrading from a stock clutch to a Stage 1 with the stock WRX 5-spd, but no worries with the South Bend/DxD. After a short break-in, even shorter then recommended, it slipped naturally and progressively with hardly any extra pedal effort. I have done tons of NYC/NNJ stop and go driving, Auto-X and around 70 drag passes with it. Other organic clutches I have used in the past have overheated or "glazed" and became completely inconsistent, but the South Bend/DxD never does. It just holds up to the frequent abuse and launches/shifts consistently pass after pass. That consistency definitely helped me to win the bracket class of last two EVO vs WRX challenges at Raceway Park. If you are looking for a mild clutch upgrade for your WRX or STi, you can't go wrong with the South Bend/DxD HD Stage 1, it is the perfect clutch upgrade in my opinion.

They also have some really cool "Feramic" ceramic/organic hybrid clutches for those that are looking for something even beefier, as well as full Feramic and Kevlar buttoned disks and an even heavier "SS Series" pressure plate. I will definitely be giving one of the Feramic hybrids a shot when I upgrade my trans. If you have any questions, please post them up and I'll try to answer the best I can.

You can find more info on all of the clutches available on their website:

Did you email Andy? He was the person I dealt with while I was debating and he was very helpful.

As I recall, he was a pretty busy guy. I would definitely try to call him again.

A little update:
6 more drag passes this Saturday and the clutch is still going strong. I was pretty hard on it this time as well, since the track was so well prepped. I was attempting to pull my first 1.6x 60' time, but wound up with two 1.73's, some higher 1.7's and 1.8's.

Awesome man, did you go with the RS/HD Stage 1? Also, did you order through Andy and did you mention that you saw the review? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts once you get some miles on it.

ive got about 2000 miles on it now, no issues, though i would like to know what they changed to justify charging so much more than the exedy oem replacement clutch. the claim its good to 316tq(i think) but it looks the same as the oem replacement from exedy and it even came in an exedy box and is stamped with exedy. i know exedy owns the patent and all subaru clutches start as exedys, but what was changed? any ideas?

I wondered the same thing when I got mine. I took it to Precision Tuning to be installed and they hadn't seen one yet, so they were interested in looking it over. The guys commented to me that it looked like it had a much stronger pressure plate and that the disc itself was of a different looking material. All I know is that I had an Exedy stock replacement previous to this and it couldn't hold the torque my car makes on my alky map, but the South Bend/DxD does.

Another update:
Put 4 more drag passes on the clutch last Wednesday. Wasn't easy on it again with a best 60' of 1.72, but it took the beating in stride!

it's pretty common to use the oem disc with a stronger PP and call it a +1 upgrade.

you keep the smooth engagement of oem but you get a decent amount more torque capacity.

i have no idea if that's what they did here, but i wanted to point out it's certainly not unheard of, and it works well.

Thanks for the input! I'm fairly certain that is the case with this clutch, but will try to confirm that is the case.

Sweet! Did you get to meet Andy? Once it is broken in, please come back and post your thoughts.

Another update:
Made 3 more drag passes on the clutch last month and it held up great yet again! My car however, spun a bearing a few days later. Now I am in the process of getting everything together for a JDM Version 8 STi engine swap. Can't wait to see if the clutch can hold the newfound power.

This clutch is AWESOME. Clutch pedal pushes in easier than stock. You can feel it push out slightly harder. I believe it similar to OE with 30 % stiffer pressure plate. I love mine. Holds my power no problem.

It's taken all my abuse so far. I just blew up my TD04, so I picked up a VF-39 this afternoon, I'll probably get around to installing that this weekend, and if I remember I'll post back about how it holds the power.
