Cyprus returns to the calendar for the first time since 2006 and will be the first mixed-surface event in the WRC since 1996, with the opening leg being run on tarmac before two days of gravel running. To add a further twist to proceedings, the crews will be forced to use hard compound gravel tyres for all three days of competition.

The event will take place over just 14 stages, but that stages will run to a little more than 330km, including one test of more than 40km on the final day.

That should make for some interesting times on the first day.

Mixed surface, SICK! This should be both interesting for the drivers and engineers. Can't wait!

News from Shakedown - 12.03.09 14:25

This morning’s Shakedown, which took place in fair weather with some light cloud, was on a dry-surfaced series of climbing 180 degree bends

Car 1 - Loeb/Elena
“Its OK”

Car 2 - Sordo/Marti
“In general everything is okay. If it rains tomorrow it will be more slippery but it will affect everyone.”

Car 4 – Latvala/Antilla
“It’s alright. There is surprising lot of gravel on the stage. The tyres are working okay but it’s a bit difficult to find the balance with the grip”

Car 5 – Wilson/Martin
“I’m just getting used to the feeling of the gravel set-up on tarmac. It is difficult but should be okay.”

Car 7 – Novikov/Moscatt
“I made some mistakes but the car is fine. When the tarmac is clean the tyres have a good grip, but when there is gravel it gets very slippery.”

Car 8 – Rautenbach/Barritt
“The gravel tyres are working quite well”

Car 9 – Villagra/Companc
“It is very slippery”

Car 11 – P Solberg/Mills
“It is good, no problems, I really enjoy it and have high hopes.”

Car 14 – Al Qassimi/Orr
“It’s difficult with the gravel tyres. They are not made for tarmac. We have been sliding all over the road”

Car 32 – Procop/Tomanek
“The tyres are very bad. I was just trying not to get a puncture”

Car 133 – Arai/McNeall
“We can’t push too hard with gravel tyres”

^^^ Thanks!

I thought the quotes were in order of road times... nice surprise at the end.

I'd like to see Petter drive a rally at 100% (just 100%).

well now that The Petter is running on his own nickel, he may switch to 99.7% mode and actually win some rallies.

Not if you believe what was said in the Norway Review portion of the Cyprus preview show.

They were interviewing Petter in his car after the long stage with the straightaways, and relating how other people were getting 194, 202, 204 etc kph... and Petter got up to 208. They just paused there waiting for a response from him..

Petter: "I have the balls!"

Also in the coverage: Going over of 2002 Cyprus and 1996 San Remo (Cyprus being the one with two spectacular rolls from McRae, and San Remo being the last dual-surface rally).

I hoe more events go to a multi surface format. Really hoping that is Loeb's downfall.

Pretty excited to see how Sandell and the Fabia do

Service flash 1 - 13.03.09 13:40

Car 1 LOEB/ELENA
Co-driver said: “Running first on the road was the best place to be this morning because all the cars have thrown up a lot of gravel. It also helps when you have the best driver in the world!” Changed brake discs and pads and replaced fluid and wheel alignment checked. Not known if suspension changed.

Car 2 SORDO/MARTI
“I did not like this morning at all but I would have loved it on the proper tyres.” He took the two extra tyres at Kykkos and changed two. Changed brake discs and pads and replaced fluid and wheel alignment checked. Not known if suspension changed.

Car 3 HIRVONEN/LEHTINEN
“I was just too slow – no excuse. The conditions were exactly as I expected.” He took one extra tyre and carried one spare. Changed hubs, discs and drive-shafts all round.

Car 4 LATVALA/ANTTILA
A consequence of the brake problem in SS2 (see Flash 2) was that he lost launch control. “There are sandbags in the stages where the edge is tricky but we kept hitting them and making things worse.” He did not take extra tyres at Kykkos, carried two spares and kept the same front ones on throughout. The right one is now stripped. “The decision was my mistake, nothing to do with Pirelli.” Changed hubs, discs and drive-shafts all round.

Car 5 WILSON/MARTIN
Said that conditions were very different from those at Shakedown. “This morning the grip kept changing and you had to feel your way.” He took one extra tyre at Kykkos and changed one.

Car 7 NOVIKOV/MOSCATT
“We overshot a junction in SS1 and lost about 20 seconds, then we spun in SS3 and lost another 20.” Routine service. Suspension not changed.

Car 8 RAUTENBACH/BARRITT
“I thought I would have a good go but I had a bad moment so slowed up.” Brakes replaced at service.

Car 9 VILLAGRA/PEREZ COMPANC
Had no problems. Said, “The roads are very dirty and this afternoon will be much worse.” He did not take extra tyres at Kykkos and carried two spares. Changed the brake pads at Service.

Car 11 P SOLBERG/MILLS
Had no problems. “Things are going exactly as expected. He took the two extra tyres at Kykkos and changed two. Changed the dampers and suspension settings.

Car 12 OGIER/INGRASSIA
“There were no problems and conditions were as expected.” He did not take extra tyres at Kykkos and carried two spares. Said he did important testing before the rally in Italy and the car is working well. Brakes replaced at service.

Car 14 AL QASSIMI/ORR
Took one extra tyre at Kykkos and changed one. Changed the front brake pads at Service.

Car 32 KOSCIUSZKO/SZCZPANIAK
Had a puncture in SS3.

Car 38 PROKOP/TOMANEK
“It’s not easy. The main problem is that suddenly there is a lot of gravel. I have been going carefully.”

Car 133 ARAI/MACNEALL
“It’s the first time I have rallied on asphalt since Germany.” He likes the engine modification because it doesn’t lose power.

Car 2 SORDO/MARTI
“I dropped time in the stage but I do not know why.”

Car 3 HIRVONEN/LEHTINEN
Small fire on the rear left wheel and said: “I am trying to maintain the pressure on Loeb.”

Car 4 LATVALA/ANTTIILA
“I don’t know why but I lost time towards the end of the stage.”

Car 5 WILSON/MARTIN
Still worried about the brakes.

Car 7 NOVIKOV/MOSCATT
Front right damage to the bodywork after hitting a road barrier (armco).

Car 8 RAUTENBACH/BARRITT
“The possibility of rain will make it even more interesting,”

Car 9 VILLAGRA/PEREZ-COMPANC
“The rear of the car is sliding too much. I don’t know if it is better to use new or old tyres.”

Car 11 SOLBERG/MILLS
He was happy with his stage result. “The car is handling much better after the suspension change.”

Car 12 OGIER/INGRASSIA
Unspecified problem and a spin in the stage.

I logged onto wrc.com for live splits/stage times for SS4 and SS5 but they weren't getting updated. Anyone else experience this?

Clearly Petter needs more time in the new car, but...trying not to be nitpicky...he seems to be in the same position he was in in the Subaru.

Maybe Petter really just is a 5th or 6th place driver in this field. Everyone else seemed to have gotten better and surpassed him.

I'm still rooting for the guy though! He is way better at giving interviews than the frenchman (yawn!)

If someone is at a rally... say this to get Petter's attention and talk to him!
