Default Well, my Baja finally needs service. Check Engine light on.

Code for catalytic converter output below threshold or something. Basically, I need a new cat, right? So what are the options? O3 NA, AT, no mods, 144,000 miles. It's a driver and I'm happy with it as it is.

No, I haven't checked on the dealer part, but it's basically the entire exhaust from what I can see, and that means serious money. I'm unemployed at the moment so money is a very real issue. Options? Alternate sources? Price? I can turn wrenches and I have a garage, plus a goodly amount of tools, so I should be able to replace it myself, maybe.

A little direction or a source for a reasonably priced part would be wonderful. I'm just not about to put $900 into a new exhaust system. I'll run it until it's time to renew my plates and then I'm screwed I guess. Unless clearing the code and error holds long enough to pass emissions.

Sorry to hear about that. Do you remember the code #? Could it be something as simple as an o2 sensor?

This code throws on my daughters 2000 Forester all the time, (about 3yrs now). Car runs great, no problems. I just keep clearing the code.

same with my 03 baja. it only has 46k on it and i got that code. cleared it and started it and it stalled right away then threw the same code. i replaced the sensor and it ran fine until it started making this very scarey sound like a pulley wobbling. after checking everything the sound lead me to the front cat. i tested it with a rubber mallet and sure enough it rattled bad when hit so the cat needs replaced.
the factory part from the likes of subarupartsforyou is around $800. personally i'm going with an ebay one for half that. its actually two cats produced by eastern catalytic and a third party has welded then up for the 2.5L. look under your car to make sure thats the one you need. i've been told that 03 was the switching point for some of subarus catalytic design. some are actually attached to the header pipe, others have a flange between the two and they can be replace seperately and then there is the one that is both in one pipe.

Isn't factory 'smog' equipment under federally-mandated warranty for 8 years 80k miles?
